Legitimate Senate Campaign Issue Or 'Internet Rumor'?

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- In the race for the Republican nomination for South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat, one hot topic of actual debate is over what could be a fictional issue.

Columbia dentist Buddy Witherspoon is challenging Sen. Lindsey Graham for the GOP nomination, challenging Graham on his support for an immigration reform plan that has been derided by opponents as "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.

Witherspoon has made immigration one of the cornerstones of his campaign, but has also tied it to his fierce opposition to a "North American Union," which would merge the United States, Canada and Mexico into one political and economic entity.


"It is apparently fashioned after the European Union," Witherspoon told WYFF News 4's Beth Brotherton. "I believe in this great nation, I've stood for it through the years and as long as I have breath in this body I will continue to stand for what is right," he said.

Witherspoon said the creation of the NAU would also mean the creation of a joint currency called the Amero, after the Euro.

"The North American Union, whether it is something that is in the making or not, we don't want to get caught in a vise all of a sudden with our constitution and sovereignty down the drain," Witherspoon said.

Graham says the issue is nonsense, nothing more than an Internet conspiracy theory he says.

"I think most Americans would find it hard to believe, it is hard to believe, a baseless Internet rumor," Graham said.

Witherspoon said he is concerned about the creation of what he calls "the Trans-NAFTA Highway."

Witherspoon said that the highway would link the three nations, so trucks could cross borders without inspection.

"What do they have on the trucks? Cargo, illegal aliens, drugs, parts of a smart bomb that could affect us like it did on 9-11?," Witherspoon said.

Graham says that, too, is just fantasy.

"People on the Internet talk about a highway built from Mexico to Canada, the countries merging, a secret plan to create a new currency, I don't know where these things come from," Graham said. "I know what is real: Iran possessing a nuclear weapon, that is a real danger."

The concept of the NAU became widespread on the Internet after a 2005 trade meeting between President George W. Bush and the leaders of Mexico and Canada.

But Bush calls the idea of an three-country union "comical."

Graham agrees. "I want to spend my time in the Senate working on real problems," he said. "There are a lot of things to worry about in the world: Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea. But the U.S., Canada and Mexico merging into one country is nothing to worry about."

The highway is Interstate 69. Part of it already passes thru Mississippi. Funding for it can be found in the 2007 Transportation Bill. As for the NAU and the Amero, anyone who reads the minutes of the SPP conferences and CFR meetings can find more than enough confirmation. Also, when Larry King had Vincente Fox on last year Fox flat out admitted the AMERO (or an equivalent) was an objective. Lou Dobbs has had that Pastor from American University on several times, and Pastor acknowledges most of this, however he "claims" these objectives will not undermine anyone's sovereignty.

There is a media conspiracy to keep this under wraps, and it is being supported by so-called conservative talk show hosts. When have Rush, Hannity, Bortz, O'Reilly or Laura Ingraham ever had a serious discussion of this issue? Yes, they discuss illegal immigration, but always as an isolated issue. I heard O'Reilly say exactly the same thing as Lindsey Grahm when a caller asked him about the NAU--It's a right wing internet conspiracy theory thing not worthy of discussion. Bortz got a call one morning about 18 months ago from a very informed caller who read him chapter and verse about the SPP, and its relevance to the NAU concept BortZ promised to research it and discuss it later. Never heard about it again on his show. Even if they disdain the NAU concept, they will not even discuss the SPP. In my opinion, they are all stooges for the Republican Party.
