Omnibus Appropriations Bill would Extend E-Verify

Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 11:16 AM

Earlier this week, the House released a $410 billion omnibus package that would extend E-Verify if approved. E-Verify, the federal government's workplace verification tool, is set to expire on March 6, but the bill would extend it to the end of fiscal year which is Sept. 30.

E-Verify was set to become mandatory on Jan. 15 for companies contracting with the federal government, but under pressure from the Chamber of Commerce and other business groups, it was delayed until Feb. 20. President Obama then delayed the requirement again shortly after taking office, making its effective date May 21.

A five-year extension was passed on the House version of the recently signed economic stimulus package, but the extension did not make its way onto the Senate version of the bill and was ultimately stripped during the final conference committee.

A vote on the omnibus bill could come later today.
