Immigration and racial profiling

Lawmakers are keeping a close watch on an immigration bill signed in Arizona . The legislation may be some of the toughest in the country, and other state governments are waiting to see if they should follow suit or hang back.

Arizona's bill orders immigrants to carry their alien registration documents, requires police to question people if there's reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally, and targets those who hire or knowingly transport illegal immigrant day laborers.

Supporters say Arizona is leading the way in enacting legislation to protect U.S. borders, while opponents say the policies are too strict and could foster racial profiling. Protests are expected in accordance with the bill's signing, as well as May Day rallies on May 1.
