PRESCOTT — Prescott police say they’ve arrested a 17-year-old high school student they say made a story about a man heading to a local high school to go on a rampage.

Spokesman Lt. Ken Morley says the teen told Prescott High School officials Friday afternoon that she got a call from a friend who told her a young man was headed to school with a gun. Police surrounded the school and also locked down an elementary school.

Morley says police noticed inconstancies in the girl’s statements as they questioned her. The girl eventually admitted she concocted the story, but didn’t say why.

The girl was booked into Coconino County’s juvenile detention center on a felony hoax charge.

The incident happened hours after a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
