Enough is enough

May 7, 2007
They marched. Unafraid! They demanded. Tens of thousands of illegal aliens recently commanded the streets of dozens of cities across the U.S., places like Los Angeles, Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, New York and Tampa.

President Bush and the two major political parties, despite the lesson of 9-11, have been complete failures in dealing with the immigration problem, and if they don’t come up with an answer before the presidential election season gets into full swing this fall, it will become a major campaign issue that will not again be addressed until 2009. And in the interim, another million or more illegal aliens will cross U.S. borders and add to the ranks of the 10-20 million (nobody knows how many) that are already here.

Has America ever gone through such a period of divided leadership on so many critical issues? The war, entitlement programs the cost of which are bleeding the strength of the nation, energy and now immigration are not only unsolved, they have yet to be seriously addressed by the sorry examples of leadership that the voters have been sending to Washington for years.

Communists of yesteryear were fond of saying that the U.S. will tumble when the bourgeois discover the road to the U.S. Treasury. Is this coming true? Have our politicians become spineless, job-protecting, power hungry pussycats who can’t make a firm decision? Have our citizens become fat cat consumers of government largesse, forgetting that freedom was won, and will be kept, by hard work and sacrifice?

Why is the problem of illegal aliens so important? There are many reasons, but only two of them will be dealt with here: Homeland security and public safety.

We are at war. Porous borders are an invitation for members of al-Qaeda to enter the land and cause a major travesty. This is self-evident.

The record of violence associated with illegal aliens is attention-getting:

270, 000 illegals served jail time in the U.S. in 2003.
Illegal aliens make up 17 percent of the federal prison population.
During the five years ended in 1999, 35,000 illegals were released from prison; over 11,000 thereafter committed serious crimes of which 1,800 were violent ones (homicide, rape, kidnapping).
About one-third of the population in federal prisons is made up of non-citizens.
About one-quarter of immigrant-headed households use at least one major welfare program.
Illegal aliens murder 12 Americans each day. This translates to over 4,000 killings a year, more than all deaths in Iraq, and more than 9-11’s death toll.
American borders must be sealed; employers of illegals must be harshly punished. A compassionate way must be found for those long-term residents who are well-employed to become U.S. citizens.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service must be flushed and modernized. Ted Kennedy, father of the current immigration mess, should move to Timbuktu. Sanctuary cities must be outlawed. Many laws need to be changed

Now! Enough is enough.
