Immigrants on Public Aid
Some observations of immigrants that I know and their dependence on public aid.
I live in LA county, we moved here from Illinois 4 years ago and I am married to a wonderful woman who is from South Korea, we have been married 12 years and have two wonderful children.
My wife is a stay at home mom, I work my tail off and we scrape by. My wifes' friends are mostly all Korean, college educated. and have children. What I am finding out is that most are on some kind of public aid.
First I would like to say I like all the people I am writing about, and in general I really like Koreans, I married one. I also like the Korean culture.
One friend was married at one time to a American citizen, got divorced moved back to Korea, remarried had a child, and recently he and his new wife moved back to Los Angeles, and live in a Gov. subsidized apt. have medical, and recieve food stamps. I don't know for sure but I believe they also receive Gov. paid child care and Wic. Both parent have college degrees and work.
Another friend just moved to California from Korea just over a year ago, they have 5 children, one of them goes to Kindergarden with my son. The father has some sort of business, they have some money, because my wife told me that they paid 6 months rent in advance to rent their house. They probably pay $1800 - $2000 per month. Today I noticed that we had two new gallons of milk in our refrigerator on top of the one we already had. My wife told me that the above mentioned friend is receiving Wic, and had these left over.
I know of at least two other Korean immigrant friends that also receive some sort of Government aid.
What is weird to me is that I have never known any of my American friends or family to ever take any type of Gov. Aid. Yet I am seeing how common and entrenched the attitude of Gov. Assistance is with immigrants in California.

Americans are too proud and California is too liberal in their distributions. I'm sure the income cap is way too high and that's exactly why California is in debt. People will take advantage of the situation, even if they don't need it.
