As Egypt's government attempts to crackdown on street protests by shutting down internet and mobile phone services, the US is preparing to reintroduce a bill that could be used to shut down the internet.

The legislation, which would grant US President Barack Obama powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet, would soon be reintroduced to a senate committee, Wired.com reported.

It was initially introduced last year but expired with a new Congress.

Senator Susan Collins, a co-sponsor of the bill, said that unlike in Egypt, where the government was using its powers to quell dissent by shutting down the internet, it would not.

“My legislation would provide a mechanism for the government to work with the private sector in the event of a true cyber emergency,â€

This is a MUST CALL. They can not be allowed to shut down communications of any sort between Americans...

Thanks Steve, but the one I wanted was of Lieberman...LOL! "the internet is a dangerous place"... yea dangerous if you're a traitor and you want your words and deeds to be kept within the Senate walls. Or you want the people of the US to be spoonfed the drivel the MSM serves up on a daily basis!

The second picture is telling... people standing up against oppressive govenment (to me I see the goverment in those dark stormy looking clouds) ... What a good shot the camerman got here.

Hey... I probably missed the boat here, but what is the plan (if any can be implemented...?) for us if that Internet switch turned off...

I just don't trust this president to do the right thing if given this power. He could declare an emergency through executive order and we would all be cut off from the internet.
