EGYPTIAN TROOPS MOVE IN AND SECURE STATE TV STUDIOS
Jul. 3, 2013 10:22am Madeleine Morgenstern
Egyptian troops moved in to secure the state TV newsroom studios in Cairo Wednesday, on the cusp of a military ultimatum to push President Mohammed Morsi out of office.
Reuters reported troops with armored vehicles secured the central studios in Cairo. Staffers not directly involved in working the broadcasts left the building, sources said.
The Associated Press reported officers from the military’s media department had moved “inside the newsroom and were monitoring output, though not yet interfering.”Opponents of Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi shout slogans during a protest in Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt, Wednesday, July 3, 2013. A Defense Ministry official said army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is meeting with his top commanders, hours before the military’s deadline to the president and opposition to resolve the nation’s political crisis is set to expire. The state-run TV had largely been favorable to the Muslim Brotherhood government, but in the last two days has already seen a shift to more balanced coverage of the anti-Morsi protests, according to the AP.
