Letter: Despite what he says, Baucus backs amnesty

Regarding the current Senate immigration bill (S134, a "prepared statement" from Sen. Baucus was quoted in The Gazette on Saturday: "I do not support amnesty for illegal aliens, and any immigrant who wants to become a citizen must pay back taxes, learn English and go to the back of the line."

This is weasel talk. The bit about "back taxes" proves that he's talking about illegal aliens, not legal immigrants, since legal immigrants routinely pay taxes. And anything that lets illegals remain in the country is amnesty, no matter what euphemism you employ. So what if they're at the back of some imaginary line? All these people care about is legal residency in our livable country, so they don't have to return and fix their nonlivable ones. Actual U.S. citizenship is irrelevant to most of them.

The bit about the bill requiring back taxes is so much hokum, anyway. An article in the Boston Globe on Saturday was headlined "Bush removes provision requiring back taxes from illegal immigrants." Read the article and you find out that they just don't want to be bothered collecting them. Think we could try that with the IRS?

It's just amazing what disdain our ruling class - which includes Baucus - has for us ordinary citizens. Please remember this when he runs for re-election next year: Baucus supports amnesty for illegal aliens.
