Lone Protester- To the Citizens of South Carolina

Lone Protester- To The Citizens of South Carolina 02/23/08

My name is Terry Funderburk and I live in Kershaw County and have a small construction business in the Columbia area. My business, like thousands of other small businesses, is shot to hell because of the non-enforcement of our immigration laws. The construction industry is the engine that powers the American economy, and in my state, 75% of the work force is composed of illegal aliens. And the small businessmen like myself are getting pushed to the side of the road and are being replaced by a brand new work force. How, in the name of God, can we compete with criminal companies that employ illegal aliens in contravention of our laws? They can underbid us by more than half. My industry is changing and I do not like what I see. Every day, I watch people breaking our laws on almost every construction site I visit. And none of them are ever arrested and made to pay for their crimes like I was.

Our state legislators are currently involved in illegal immigration legislation. There was a series of meetings held around the state dealing with the subject the last few months. In the particular ones that I made, I listened to a bunch of South Carolinians voice their anger at our politicians because of their non-action in insuring that our laws, both state and federal, are enforced. Our politicians have failed us, the citizens of this great state, in this matter. Our state is over run with an unofficial estimate of 500,000 illegal aliens. And our leaders refuse to deal with the problem. Instead of listening to the citizens, our politicians listen to the business interests that are employing the illegal aliens and breaking our laws. Instead of listening to the citizens of South Carolina, our leaders are listening to the special interests. They are aiding and abetting law breaking on a massive scale. Their excuse is that they are not allowed to enforce federal immigration laws. Well, I ask them, what other federal laws do you refuse to enforce?

I go out to construction sites every day, I watch contractors, subcontractors and other businesses knowingly break our laws on a daily basis. They do it because they know nothing will happen to them. Last week I listened to our president say something about us being a nation of laws on the radio, at a job site. I had to laugh as he said it, because, I looked out the window of my truck and saw the lie in his words. I saw fifteen illegal aliens, and three American businessmen that employ them hard at work. And not one of them had any fear of being arrested and jailed for their crimes, like I was. A lot of my fellow small businessmen are gone , replaced by workers and companies that have no respect for our laws. They are gone and I wonder what are they doing now.

I wonder why did they not put up a fight? Why did they just go into bankruptcy and being run out of business by people that are breaking our laws. Why did they go quietly into the night without fighting? I know why. It is because they knew that trying to fight against a system that has already proven itself useless in the enforcement of our laws, was hopeless. Why fight if every cop ignores refuses to enforce our immigration laws. Why fight when the people and companies that are breaking our laws have more rights than the citizens of this great state? Why fight when you might stand a chance of getting arrested because you are trying to bring attention to the problem? Why fight, when the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce has more influence with our legislators that the citizens do? Why fight when our senior senator, Lindsey Graham will call you a racist and a bigot if you say anything about it?

I will tell you why you must fight. It is because our Constitution starts out with, “We The Peopleâ€

Do you know how nicely you write Terry? You should continue doing so. You know what they say.....that God never closes doors without opening windows? Well, it could just be that your experience, no matter how unfortunate it was that you needed to go through all of this, is that open window

    Thanks for another great post!

Very inspiring words, Terry. Nice work. I suppose you are sending this to every state politician in SC and every newspaper editorial area. ALSO, a special edition to Lindsey "tell the Bigots to Shut Up" Graham.

Terry -- I sure hope you and all like-minded South Carolinians go into that ballot box this November and vote Lindsey Graham OUT OF OFFICE!

That man is a despicable traitor who is under the thumb of the Chamber of Commerce. He HAS to go.

And if at any time you get discouraged, remember this photo of him (click on the link below and scroll down a little bit) with Ted Kennedy and Mel Martinez yukking it up in the senate just after it was announced that a comprehensive immigration deal was reached back in May of last year. (I actually prefer to think they were yukking it up because they knew they were sticking it to the people and took glee in it because it keeps me p***ed.)

They were SO confident that that bill was going to be passed yet it went down in flames a month later when WE THE PEOPLE shut down the Senate phones.

I wish I lived in South Carolina so I could help vote him out. I hope South Carolinians don't do a "John McCain" and vote him back into office. Stop him NOW!!

I agree, this is well-written and most importantly, an inspiring call to get involved and take action.

Terry, may I send this letter out in emails? I would also like permission to post it on IFIRE, an anti-illegal immigration site for Indiana. We are fighting really hard to get a bill against employers passed. I think your letter would be an asset.

I feel your pain. I am also a small business owner in the construction industry, and have gone from 28 employees, and sales of over 1.3 million a year to 2 employees (myself and my son-in-law) working out of my home in Georgico. My "down-sizing" was primarily due to competition out bidding me as well. The only way we've survived is to stop bidding and try to find customers like the ones on this web site-- TRUE Americans who will pay a little more to deal with honest law abiding businessmen like themselves. They are hard to find, as everyone seems to want to save money, even at the expense of their own culture. Georgia is starting to hear the people and pass some anti-illegals laws. My neighborhood now has 3 abandoned homes where a total of 9 hispanic families used to live. They packed up in the middle of the night and left. One of them is the house next door to us, every so often a van will come by and check the mail box and pick up all the old newspapers in the driveway. I'm worried about what will happen in a couple of months when the grass starts growing. Hang in there my friend, we will survive with the help of people like those here in ALIPAC!
