Out of Bounds: Paul pushes NAFTA highway myth

Throw the flag against: Ron Paul.

Call: Unsportsmanlike conduct.

What happened: In an anti-NAFTA radio ad that's airing in Iowa, Paul denounces "powerful elites" who "want to completely erase our borders with Canada and Mexico. These special interests threaten us with a total loss of sovereignty. The NAFTA superhighway, a part of this scheme, has threatened to force thousands off their land. Some believe the highway's path will go right through Iowa. As your president, I will stop all efforts to take away America's freedom. I have always opposed and will continue to fight against NAFTA and the North American Union."

On the campaign trail, Paul has denounced "secret funding" for the superhighway, which he described as 12 lanes wide, stretching from Mexico to Canada.

Why that's wrong: There is no NAFTA superhighway being built or in the planning stages, and no sovereignty-busting North American Union, according to federal, state and local officials. They call it an Internet urban myth spread by nativist commentators who combine legitimate efforts to improve the nation's transportation infrastructure with their rabble-rousing conspiracies.

Penalty: Lower Paul's reputation for honesty by 15 yards.

Boy, they are trying hard, aren't they?

It reminds me of the editorials years ago that kept reporting we didn't have an illegals in this country.

If you search on the Council of Foreign Relations website, you get a good bit of info. regarding the super hwy.

It was on their main page 1.5 weeks ago when I sent to another liar, Jeffrey Toobin. Now it has mysteriously disappeared from the main, but other info. can be found.

Tell this dude to mosey on down to Texas so he can see for himself and quit blabbering his fat lips!

Unfortunately, this is the second or third time I've seen Ron Paul called a liar for fighting against the superhighway and the NAU.

Ron Paul is only against NAFTA because it’s managed by the government without government he is for it.

Ron Paul’s TRUE FREE TRADE(NAFTA on steroids) and his GOLD STANDARD is no better than NAFTA and would be worst since the corporations would go unchecked and the ones with the MOST GOLD would make the rules. These are libertarian views which are for open borders, free travel, no one is illegal and if you listen to his speeches you can pick up on his agenda. True golbalist wants government out and let corporations rule.

That describes exactly what we have now -

I don't know if Ron Paul would be better - but whatever is done is going to have to be something very different than the direction we have been taking for 50 or more years.

The same old, same old, political rhetoric won't do it.

Well Paul is stumping against the plan, and including it in his ads as well.

The most important thing is to get the world out to the general public that the NAU and superhighway do exist. Many in the news media are stating it is a figment of Paul's imagination.
