    Standing With the Mob

The five major candidates for governor chose political expedience over statesmanship last week when they unanimously denounced a community-college policy of admitting illegal immigrants.

Their positions against the admission of these young people to the college system stand in sharp contrast to that of Gov. Mike Easley, who said that North Carolina should not blame these young people, many of whom have no memory of the homelands of their parents, for their illegal status.

By standing with the mob that wants to run these young people back across the border, and most likely into lands about which they know little, the five candidates showed a depressing lack of courage.

Most disturbing of all the candidate reactions is that of Orr. We’ve come to expect more wisdom from the former justice. Whatever happened to the “opportunity societyâ€
