Are Latinos really a minority ?

    ARE LATINOS MINORITIES?

Latinos are now America’s largest minority.

    I have one question.

    Why?

No, not the numbers. I understand about the birth rate and the immigration. I know that there are 37 million Latinos in America and 36 million blacks and that there are more Latinos than blacks. The numbers are easy.

What I don’t understand is why Latinos are a “minority.â€

The Government passes laws making it illegal to judge anybody by the color of their skin.

then turns around and forces laws on us based TOTALLY on the color of skin.

Makes a lot of sense doesn't it. What I would like to know is this: At one time I lived in a town where 62% of the population was Hispanic, how come they were still called minorities?

This makes a good point. Hispanic/Latino isn't a race, it's a culture, but for some reason people of this culture are considered a minority along with every race but Caucasian. Many hispanics are "caucasian". (others are either black, asian, indian, or a combination) Yet all hispanics are considered in the minority?

So why can't they get the special benefits other minorities get if they are now classified as a minority?

New figures from the Census Bureau show minority groups comprise an increasing share of the population in all but one state.

The latest Census survey -- done in 2005 and released Tuesday -- shows Hispanics are increasing their hold as the largest minority group. They account for 14.5 percent of the population, compared with 12.8 percent for blacks.

Whites are now a minority in California, Texas, Hawaii, New Mexico and the District of Columbia.

The Census Bureau also finds that the largest immigrant populations are in California, New York, Texas and Florida. But the data shows immigrants will travel if there's work available.

Only West Virginia is not increasing in diversity. Experts blame its struggling economy and little history of attracting immigrants.

At first, when I worked for Wendy's and other fun jobs (really), no job asked your "ethnicity" much less race. You applied, you were cool, that was it.

Secondly, I was Caucasian, and yes you HAD to check the box (no "decline to identify").

Thirdly, I was Caucasian and I did NOT have to specify (which was good - no affirmative action).

    Lastly, I was (Non-Hispanic) Caucasian
Or I could have been a (Non-Hispanic) Black
    or Hispanic
    or Pacific Islander
    or Asian

    Look it up!!
This is who we are on census data.
We are 3/5 categorized by Hispanic if we respond at all (actually way less by population of course)
    when did I become a NON-HISPANIC???

Look it up for yourself. I was shocked. Enough said.
