English Immersion Works. To Oppose It Is Racist!

In 1997, California voters passed Prop. 227 to essentially end bilingual education and require English "immersion" for non-English speaking students. Opposition was largely based on the R word....anyone who advocated passage was obviously a dangerous racist intent on destroying Mexican culture and hindering the education of immigrants.

My question at the time was: Why am I a racist for wanting to preserve the English-language heritage in America, while an illegal immigrant from Mexico is somehow justified in rejecting English in favor of his/her cultural link to Spanish?

By the way, leftists warned that Prop 227 would destroy young immigrant students: Lower test scores and lifetime emotional scars were among the dire consequences forecast.

Educators who specialized in bilingual were adamant in opposition---primarily because they were paid more!

So what happened? Prop 227 passed overwhelmingly and a number of studies have confirmed it to be a huge academic success. Test scores have not plummeted, but have actually improved! Mass suicides have not taken place in the immigrant community.

I am an Englih Only advocate. Unyielding.

Not only did California pass Prop 227, did you know that the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE in California is ENGLISH! No one enforces it, but someday, given the right circumstance, you might hear about a massive suit against Le Raza etc.

Good for YOU! I wish EVERY SINGLE STATE WOULD DO THE SAME THING and, really, our FEDERAL GOVERNMENT should pass an ENGLISH AS OUR OFFICIAL LANGUAGE LAW.

Ok, well I can speak from experience the only way to learn english right is to immerse in it 100%. I am against bilingual education because that does not teach you anything. It dumbs you up more than teach. Half of the kids that did take bilingual classes are the same ones that now are not in college, have problems speaking and writing english. I have no problem with speaking the native language at home, with your family, personal use(i do it) but in school, work, etc. English or it will never be learned.

Re: English Immersion Works. To Oppose It Is Racist!

John since your in San Jose,

I went to Heald tech college in Santa Clara around 1981 .
Now to get in you had to take tests and pass them, one of course was english.

What was funny is the 1st 2 rows of each class were Non Americans who could not speak or read english and in fact the teacher would have to spend excess time with them and not answering our questions

Question is since they could not speak or read english how did they pass the entrance exams and how come they got grants for free education and I had to bust my ass paying my way through school while supporting my family ?
Worse was in 2 years they never learned english but somehow passed all tests.

All kinds of laws we vote in just to have one moron judge call our laws illegal which were laws about what illegals are not allowed to do, sound confusing ?
of course because most in Ca cannot speak english.

Its simple when you have someone like bush who does not know what the world illegal means, and he says those illegal are brave to sneak into our country like roaches in the night and then expect they will honor our laws when they are told not to learn english so they cannot read out laws to know what is illegal.

Damn is this confusing and no wonder those in office do not know they are aiding illegals violating laws that are illegal.

Arizona too passed "English Immersion" for public schools a few years ago too. One of our biggest problems has been school districts that won't comply with state law and allow for waivers to parents who ask for them for their children. Many school districts have fought tooth and nail to avoid compliance and have not gotten in trouble when it is found out.

    "

I do not know how they manage. I know that California has implemented some upgraded requirements----students must pass a test before graduating! That is constantly under attack by the left because its unfair to those who have English as a 2nd language. BS!

The lefties tried that with our English immersion law and failed! They also lost in Arizona when they tried to thwart Prop 200!
