Does the Immigration Plan Walk a Fine Enough Line?

As the Senate considers the bill, the lawmakers who wrote it must persuade skeptical conservative lawmakers that the plan does enough to punish immigrants who illegally entered the country. The bill would offer most of the country’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants a way to become citizens.

In the Senate, at least half of the Republicans, as well as some conservative Democrats, would have to back the controversial measure for it to pass. In the House, the bill’s proponents will need support from at least 70 Republicans.

Conservative critics, however, have denounced the bill, bitterly labeling it “amnestyâ€
