    Four questions about immigration

    Gene McIntyre

    May 2, 2007

There are four questions pertinent for citizens here to ask and receive answers to from the protesters, and those in support of them, who march in our streets demanding citizenship status without going through proper consulate channels while still in their homelands and then waiting to enter legally through permission granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS):

    1. Taking to the streets of our cities, our federal buildings and our capitols, the folks who participate as protestors have placed great organizational effort into appearing as a group force to make their demands heard. In doing so, they threaten U.S. social order, provide a disruptive presence, and make a nuisance of themselves. Why is it they won't band together in their nations of origin, from wherever they've decided to come to the U.S., to bring about the reforms they seek at home so it's not necessary for them to invade the U.S. seeking jobs where a welcome mat among the population-at-large is not laid out for their arrival? Are not the Central American nations in need of being reformed so they serve all their citizens? Wouldn't it seem the right thing to do to make an at-home effort to organize so the wealth in these places is more evenly distributed and persons seeking work and a better life have their desires satisfied?

    2. What is it that leads these folks to believe that carrying Cuban, Honduran, Mexican and Salvadoran flags through the streets of U.S. cities, where they disrupt traffic and shout in the faces of those who are here legally, is action that will bring them friends and supporters among American citizens?

    3. Realizing that a great number of crimes are committed by those here legally, why is it that any casual overview of daily news items seems to report that persons of Hispanic and Latino origin are significantly contributing to an unprecedented crime wave here? Why is it that the families and communities of these folks do not make as great an effort to practice a measure of control over the children, youth and adults among them as they do to organize on behalf of a free ride to amnesty and citizenship without going through the steps to legal immigration?

    4. What is it in the hearts and minds of these folks that leads them to believe that the citizens here should accommodate their language and customs when every other immigrant, legal or otherwise, in past and present times has made a concerted effort to blend in and adopt the language and ways of the nation they've chosen to enter? What is it in the outlook of these folks that leads them to believe that they "own" our American nation and it should now be turned over to their whim and fancy?

U.S. agencies are manned and paid by taxpayers to address and do something about the problem of illegal immigrants. It would seem timely now that those agencies and persons who've accepted as their duties and responsibilities to uphold U.S. laws on immigration and do what they've been paid to do. Their charge should be to get serious about this work, moving the deportation effort along at a brisker and more decisive speed no matter how large the number of those purported numbers of those who are here illegally.

As for those office holders, some among our own Oregon legislators, who come out in support of those who are here illegally and lend support to their demands that they be given amnesty and full citizenship, I would reserve a special place in hell for them. Frankly, it is my opinion they should be brought up on charges of dereliction of duty to protect and preserve the American people and the sovereignty of this nation. In a word, I view them as guilty of treason.
