The MM base camp site atop a large hill overlooking La Gloria
Canyon,
one of the WORST hard drug trafficing entry points in North America,
is the front yard for the Border Watch MM (Ca MM). To the south,
only 25 feet away from the hammocks in which they sleep, and relax
in
when they can, lies the world's most corrupt country, Mexico. To
the
north, lies heavy brush, infested with jack rabbits and
rattlesnakes. Another mile or so to the north is the tiny hamlet of
Campo, Ca. The BLM land they are situated on, and some private
property abutting it, are all that lie between the prospering land
of
the United States, and the fourth-world, corrupt country of Mexico!
All that separates the MM that man this post from the Mexican
Army and Narco cartels is one layer of 18 gauge landing matt iron,
left over from WW2 and Vietnam. To the west goes the border fence
dirt road, an atrocity to the name road, due to its poor maintenance
and years of indifference by consecutive U.S. administrations.
About
2 miles down this road lies the monument to the Pacific Crest
Trailhead, which begins/ends at the Mexican and Canadian Borders.
Two hundred yards below this monument lies the camp of the "goons".
To the east of the MM Base Camp lies the end of the Border fence
road, and the beginning of a crude barricade made up of railroad
rails atop a series of pilons driven into the ground. This
menagerie
of parts is more or less all welded together to form a semi barrier
to vehicles, but says "bienvenidos" to Mexican foot traffic! You
don't have to climb or jump, or crawl, or separate any strands of
barbed wire here, to get across, just STEP into the United States,
across its SOVEREIGN BORDER! Chances are, you won't even be seen,
much less caught, since there is only about ONE patrol by the U S
Border Patrol per hour along this area of the Border. As this
barricade passes down the hill from the MM camp it enters and then
exits the famous Gloria Canyon, famous for hard drugs, and hard
nosed
coyotes, who also ply their people smuggling trades here. As the
fence/barricade passes up the far side of Gloria Canyon it tops the
ridge line and decends into another famous drug smuggling canyon
known as Smith Canyon, put on the map by the recent shooting of a
B.P. Agent there, who received 25 or 30 rounds of AK-47 fire to him
and his vehicle. Smith Canyon is now reportedly running much more
drug traffic since the MM have all but bottled up Gloria Canyon to
the west. Both of these canyons are MAJOR DRUG trafficing routes,
and are EXTREMELY dangerous areas to be in or near during times of
drug transport. Jim brings supplies up for the MM, who try to sleep with "one eye open"
during the day, as we all are up each and every night in the heart
of
the drug running country known as Gloria Canyon. Last night the
B.P.
said one of their sensors detected a total of 4 illegals getting
through Gloria, down low. They said it was two men and two women,
which says to us that they were apprehended. Not bad, compared to
the several hundred /night before we got here! Brett would like to
see it ZERO getting through, but most of the rest of us are pleased
at the success we are enjoying at present with Gloria Canyon. We
should have a second generator and lights to "spring" on the
druggies
tonight if our ham operator comes through for us, as promised. I
have a feeling the local drug cartel is getting apprehensive, seeing
American Flags being planted down the hill, radio towers being
erected, signs being posted, and SOMEBODY keeps putting those little
hangman nooses in the bushes on the narco trails down in the canyons!
This morning two of the locals who say they own a 40 acre spread
south of the Border came walking their dogs up the Border rod to our
camp. They asked permission from Brett to enter the camp, which
greatly pleased Brett, who does not like people just barging into
our
camp anytime they feel like it. One of our camera men came "under
the
gun" as he came speeding down the Border road towards our camp at
10:00PM last night. He turned off at the last minute onto the other
road which runs parallel to the main border road, which was a good
thing for both him and us. I told him about the dumb thing he had
done, and all he could say was,"thanks for not shooting me". He
finally realized what it involves when you have a $25,000.00 price
on
your head and cars are speeding for the heart of your camp in the
middle of the night! The two local entering our camp this morning
told us that we should be very careful, as we could be shot at. We
told them we already knew that. I asked the two about what the
reasons were we had not been shot at already, and they replied," they
( meaning the Mexicans) are scared to death of you." "The Mexican
press is playing it up that you guys are the ones that shot the two
Mexicans in the desert the other day, despite the Mexicans
themselves
saying it was other Mexicans who shot them!" "They are afraid of
the
atrocities that you are going to commit on them!" The guy doing the
most talking said he worked for ICE in Tecate, and had a Mexican
girlfriend, who he said was "getting her papers, real soon." He said
he lived in Mexico part of the time, so I guess that with a Mexican
girlfriend, he should have as clear of an insight as anyone into the
mindset of the Mexicans. The guys were needing money and had some
things they wanted to sell, which is the real reason they had
approached our camp in the meantime. Brett bought all of the items
they were selling, which numbered about 17 in all, but I am not
going
to divulge what these items are without first asking Brett, as they
are of a rather sensitive nature in regards to guarding the Border.
(Not politically correct) HBO is supposed to send out a film crew to
do a documentary on the Border, and we have been warned to consider
them as UN-FRIENDLY, due to their previous articles on guns, etc.
The MM have basically 3 grades of press relations: 1:Friendly and
objective. 2: Un-friendly;we'll let you film and interview, with
caution. 3:Banned press; screw us once, shame on you. Srew us
twice,
shame on us. Right now, HBO has the #2 rating for press.
I got a late start this morning and have not had a chance to talk to
the MAIN MM patrol which was at other places (I think in Jacumba)
last night. It's 4:30 PM right now and I'm running late already.
I'll try to get a more detailed report out tomorrow, IF I can get
5or6 hours of sleerp somewhere between now and then. I know my
reports may sound like my mind is wandering, compared to
normal...well it is!
