Hispanics Urged to Refrain from Shopping, Work Tomorrow

    By Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) -- Hispanics are being urged to refrain from shopping tomorrow and to stay home from work if possible to show their objections to a sweeping proposal to crack down on illegal immigration in Georgia.

Despite that, representatives of six poultry processing plants in the Gainesville area say they do not plan to close in anticipation of a shortage of workers.

Tom Hensley is vice president and chief financial officer for Fieldale Farms. He says all three of the company's plants in the Gainesville area plan to remain open.

Radio station Que Buena FM in Gainesville has been broadcasting details of the request that Hispanics refrain from spending money tomorrow in Hall County.

The bill is sponsored by state Senator Chip Rogers. It denies state services to adults living in the state illegally. It sanctions companies that knowingly employ undocumented workers, and also imposes stiff penalties on human trafficking. headed for a vote in the House tomorrow.

The bill then would have to be approved by the Senate, which has already passed a version by a 40-to-13 vote. Rogers says he fears the controversy over the bill could affect his family's safety.

This week, the weekly Mundo Hispanico newspaper displayed a map of Rogers' Woodstock neighborhood, detailing the nearby Hispanic-owned businesses in an attempt to portray how the area would be affected by his legislation. Rogers says the map could put his wife and four children at risk.

The editor of the Spanish-language newspaper -- Juan Arango -- defended his decision to run the story. He says the map only gives readers a general idea of where Rogers lives -- not a street name or address. (With help from WDUN, Ken Stanford, and Georgia Public Broadcasting, Susanna Capelouto).

New editor named at Mundo Hispánico,
    Georgia’s largest Spanish-language newspaper

ATLANTA (June 28, 2005) – Juan Arango has been named editor of Mundo Hispánico, Georgia’s largest Spanish-language newspaper.

Arango joins Mundo Hispánico from Hoy, the Hispanic daily newspaper published by the Tribune Company in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, where he served as executive editor/senior vice president. Under his leadership, Hoy won an array of awards, including Best Hispanic Newspaper in the United States and Best Overall Design from the National Association of Hispanic Publications.

Lino Dominguez, publisher of Mundo Hispánico, said, "The addition of Juan marks a new era for Mundo Hispánico. Juan has a passion for journalism, and he is a superb choice to take our newspaper to the next level.”

Alex Taylor, vice president and business manager of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which acquired Mundo Hispanico in 2004, added, "Juan's experience with launching and growing editorial products in the three major markets he has served will prove to be an invaluable resource as we continue to extend the reach of Mundo Hispánico."

Arango commented, "I am proud to become part of Mundo Hispánico's talented team. Serving Greater Atlanta's thriving Hispanic community is an exciting challenge and a serious commitment.”

Arango offers more than 20 years of experience in journalism and management. Before joining the Tribune Company, Arango was president and editor in chief for Travesía, a travel magazine. Previously, as founding senior partner and creative director of Perfil Gráfico Ltda., a design studio in Colombia, he created and launched a variety of successful publications. Arango has also worked as a political consultant and university professor in Colombia.

A pioneer in its field, Mundo Hispánico has served metropolitan Atlanta’s Hispanic market since 1979. With a circulation more than double that of its nearest competitor, Mundo Hispánico is the oldest and most well respected Spanish-language publication in the market. Acquired by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2004, Mundo Hispánico is the largest Spanish-language newspaper north of Florida and south of New Jersey; it is distributed via retailers that serve Atlanta’s Spanish-speaking audience.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is a division of Cox Enterprises, Inc., one of the nation's leading media companies and providers of automotive services.
