Obama Compares Ho Chi Minh to Thomas Jefferson

Obama Compares Ho Chi Minh to Thomas Jefferson

by AWR Hawkins 26 Jul 2013, 5:50 AM

As President Obama met with Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang on July 25, The PJ Tatler reported thatObama reminisced about how Ho Chi Minh was "actually inspired by the words of Thomas Jefferson"--how the founder of the Viet Minh and one of the Founders of the United States had so much in common.

To be fair, the statement is understandable in as much as Minh framed the earliest portions of the 1945 Vietnam Declaration of Independence on the actual Declaration of Independence written by Jefferson in 1776.

Yet it is inexcusable in as much as Minh stripped any meaningful emphasis on God out of the Vietnam Declaration, focusing instead on Jacobin equality and the glory of the State.

Think about it--the Vietnam Declaration of Independence opens with words drawn directly from Jefferson: "All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
In the Vietnam Declaration, these words are followed by a complete dismissal of the Creator via the following: "This immortal statement was made in the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America in 1776. In a broader sense, [it] means: All peoples on the earth are equal from birth, all the peoples have right to live, to be happy and free."
Our Founding Fathers would be the first to tell you this is exactly what Jefferson's words didn't mean--they weren't an egalitarian equivalent to "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" or the French "Declaration of the Rights of Man."
Rather, their purpose was to stress that our most basic, fundamental rights come from God rather than the State, and those rights are unassailable by man-made governments for that reason.
To Ho Chi Minh, the power of the state was paramount. To Thomas Jefferson, the state was held in check by the God-given freedoms of the people.
