Schools no longer have to check the immigration status of incoming students in Alabama.

Kudos to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for blocking part of Alabama's harsh new immigration law. Thanks to the ruling, no longer will schools have to check students' immigration status, nor will immigrants be punished for not carrying papers showing their status.

The school rule would - of course - scare families from getting their kids educated. And the "papers, please" provision would drive illegal immigrants out of the state and deeper into shadows.

Two legal strikes against a bad law. May a higher court throw it out entirely.

When the SCOTUS mandated free education for IAs in Plyer vs Doe a key point was the costs would be so minimal as not to burden the taxpayers providing the education. That may have been true back then but not anymore. Collecting the info would allow an actual cost to be determined. Can't have that! The people might get MAD!

ok so follow the court ruling and let them go to school. There is NO stipulation however that the school or state MUST give them credit for attending. Enact a law stating that all students wishing to receive diplomas and credits MUST provide proof of legal citizenship. That includes colleges as well. If they want their credits then those undocumented kids can leave and reenter the country legally and then apply for their credits and diplomas.

What's with the patriotic picture? Like we're expected to believe that illegal students say the pledge of allegiance every day?

This is an editorial so I think we can assume that the newspaper as a whole holds this opinion.

I thought it was already a Federal law that everyone has to carry identifications? I know if your here visiting you have to be able to produce your visa or green card when asked and I know from personal experience that the first thing a cop will ask a Citizen for is a picture ID/License.
