Poll: Far more Republicans than Democrats say immigration is a top problem

Poll: Far more Republicans than Democrats say immigration is a top problem

    01/15/18 07:58 PM EST

A new poll finds that roughly four times as many Americans who identify as Republican or lean toward the GOP say immigration is a top U.S. problem, compared to Democrats.

Sixteen percent of Republicans in the Gallup survey released Monday say immigration is the biggest problem in America — up from only 9 percent last month and far more than the 4 percent of Democrats who say the same. In the GOP, immigration ties with "government dissatisfaction" as the top-ranked problem.

Among Democrats, government dissatisfaction is by far the front-runner, with 30 percent of respondents listing it. Race relations comes in second among Democrats with 8 percent.

The poll comes as lawmakers on Capitol Hill struggle to reach a deal on immigration reform as the government heads toward a possible shutdown at the end of the week.

    President Trump
met with Senate lawmakers in the Oval Office last week to discuss immigration, but his remarks in the meeting blew up to be a major controversy after he reportedly described several nations as "shithole
    "shithole countries."

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump allegedly said, referring to immigrants from African countries, Haiti and El Salvador.

The White House initially did not deny the comment, but Trump later tweeted on Friday that he did not say "anything derogatory about Haitians."

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who attended the meeting, confirmed that Trump said the remarks despite the president's denial.

Trump on Monday blamed Durbin for twisting what he had said in the meeting, dubbing him "Dicky Durbin."

"Senator Dicky Durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the DACA meeting. Deals can’t get made when there is no trust! Durbin blew DACA and is hurting our Military," he tweeted, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program his administration has ended.

Trump has repeatedly accused Democrats of not being serious about making a deal on DACA, which has become a key focus in immigration talks.

I wonder about these polls. Everyday we Californians are being slammed about illegal immigrants. Most Americans believe that all of California is for DACA and illegal immigrants. I do not care what the newstory is, if the word California is in the article people feel free to start slinging insults and threats. We have to be the most hated state in the U.S. By the number of hateful comments there has to be more than 16% Republicans that think immigration is important.

Check out the list of choices and you'll understand why .... it's quite a laundry list of choices. So the fact that it was number 1 for Republicans and number 2 for Democrats means it is the overwhelming top priority of the nation. Also, you have to keep in mind that when you start making progress on an issue, people move on to other issues. Most people believe we are making progress on the illegal immigration front with reduced apprehensions at the border, more deportations, end of DACA as well as reducing legal immigration with the travel bans, reduced refugee admission levels, ordering ends to several TPS programs, fighting sanctuary cities, end of catch and release, they believe this Administration is working on this and achieving results. Notice jobs wasn't even on the list of choices and only Democrats were unhappy with taxes. Go figure!

Dissatisfaction with government is reflected by dissatisfaction withhall government levels, local, state and federal including Congress. So, I think it's pretty close in terms of priority given all the many choices.

Here's a link to the poll summary:
