Diana Deggette sent me a response to an email i sent here a couple of months ago:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for H.R. 4437, the "Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005." I appreciate the opportunity to learn your views and to share my own.

As with all Americans, I am concerned about the impact of illegal immigration. We must strictly enforce existing laws to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. And, I am always open to new ways of strengthening our border. However, I could not support H.R. 4437, which passed by a vote of 239-182, because it was an overly punitive enforcement-only measure which will not solve our current immigration problem. As long as there are willing employers and willing employees, as well as families that simply want to be united, putting up more and more barriers will not stop people from coming to the United States .

What we need is comprehensive and realistic immigration reform. That is why I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2330, the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of 2005." This bill would strengthen existing laws to curb illegal immigration, create a temporary worker program, foster family reunification, and provide an opportunity for current undocumented immigrants and future temporary workers to one-day become citizens. Finding a creative solution that balances our country's spirit of openness, need for immigrants, respect for the rule of law, and need to ensure our national security is important to me, and I will be sure to follow the progress of this issue closely.
