QUINCY -- Tea Party activists rallied at the American Legion Post 95 here this evening in favor of legislation that would bar illegal immigrants from receiving state benefits.

An independent poll this month found that 70 percent of Massachusetts voters -- including most Republicans and more than half of the Democrats -- support a GOP proposal that failed in the House in April. Only 17 percent opposed it and the rest were unsure.

In late April, the Democrat-controlled House narrowly defeated a proposal by state Representative Jeffrey D. Perry, a Sandwich Republican, that would have required anyone receiving public benefits to be verified first by a federal program. Perry said he wanted to bar illegal immigrants from gaining access to public housing, unemployment benefits, welfare, or workers compensation, especially during a tight budget year.

State Representative Daniel K. Webster, a Republican of Pembroke who filed his own immigration legislation leading up to the rally, said recent events show that Massachusetts should do a better job cracking down on illegal immigration.

He pointed to recent examples: Two Pakistani men detained last week in connection with the investigation into the attempted Times Square bombing were arrested on immigration violations. In addition, President Barack Obama's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, lived for years in public housing in Boston in defiance of a deportation order. Onyango successfully reopened her case in December and won asylum this week.

Webster this week filed additional legislation to impose stiff fines, ranging from $5,000-$10,000, on employers who hire illegal immigrants, in addition to up to 2.5 years in jail. Repeat offenders could face five or more years in jail.

"I’ve spoken with a lot of people about the bill and they seem to think it’s a good idea," he said. "This is an issue that’s gaining a lot of steam. People who are elected officials have to take it seriously. I'm certainly going to continue to push it."

The rally comes at a time when the debate over illegal immigration is heating up in Massachusetts and nationwide.

Last month Arizona passed the strictest immigration law in the country, intensifying calls from advocates for immigrants on Congress and President Barack Obama to create a pathway to legal residency for the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

An estimated 190,000 unauthorized immigrants live in Massachusetts -- about 1 in 5 of all immigrants in the state.

I read they are also confiscating actual businesses and their assets for hiring illegal immigrants

OMG... pinch me... are people really beginning to stand up for the future of our children? I thought everyone had rolled over, playing dead (except for those on this website).

Mass of all places? It must really be hitting home and destroying the country if Mass. going to stand up and do something. I would even think JFK who served for his country would be rolling over in his grave as a Muslim dictator calls the shots in this country.
