Rep Pete Sessions (R-CA), Rebrands Himself as Anti-Amnesty, Eyes Cantor’s Majority Leader Spot

The repercussions of Eric Cantor’s primary defeat as well the anarchy developing on our southern border are combining to give new life to the push back against amnesty by House Republicans. The topic seems destined to become a pivotal issue in the selection process of a successor to Cantor as Majority Leader.

The chairman of the House Rules Committee, Pete Sessions (R-TX), made a move towards positioning himself favorably for that spot by recognizing the political hazards of “knowing better than your constituents” when it comes to amnesty. He has now declared that securing the border is a “huge focus” for him. He didn’t provide any background as to the sudden interest, but the events in Virginia seem to have clearly had something to do with it.

Sessions said, “I am going to focus on the border. I am going to focus on fixing the border. We are going to make sure that this administration gets closer, and closer, and closer to securing the border. And we’re going to have to take us there. And if we don’t, we’re going to lose our country. We’re going to lose who we are as a country.”

House Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is also interested in Cantor’s position, and is expected to campaign among his colleagues as well. McCarthy was one of those invited along with Eric Cantor and Speaker Boehner to attend the pro-amnesty chit chat with the money changers on Amelia Island earlier this year. Also on the agenda for that event was the plan to target conservative candidates and to promote the more moderate, Democrat-lites within the Republican Party, such as McCarthy.

If McCarthy were to get Cantor’s position, he would likely be virtually indistinguishable from his predecessor. That may be the case with Sessions as well, as his willingness to bring an immigration bill to the floor of the House, support of funding for obamacare and vote against Benghazi hearings has earned him the label of RINO in some circles.

Sessions spoke to a hallway full of reporters saying, “I think that I am a conservative, I’ve always been a conservative, I’m a pro-business conservative, and I think that they will see a focus about what I think we should accomplish and I would expect to get an understanding – cleanly – about what this would mean.”

He continued, saying, “Any Texan can tell you this. We are in trouble and our country is in trouble. Our country is in trouble because of the corruption and the terrible things….[and the] lawlessness that are happening. That is quickly becoming a huge issue that I will focus on.”

He’s got a point on that one, residents of some of the more liberal states, like New York, Illinois, and McCarthy’s California, which embrace amnesty, might have a different take on things than conservative Americans in Texas. One thing is certain, we can expect that the same controllers who put Cantor and Boehner into their positions to field a candidate or two for this go around.

The political events coupled with the reality of the situation at the border could move public sentiment and political action in favor of the American citizens, towards conservative values and away from amnesty. We don’t need more of the same; we need more of the different.
