The city council of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania is attempting to squelch the free speech rights of groups in the area by imposing what amounts to a free speech tax. The free speech tax will be in excess of $1,000 for the right to protest or rally. Wilkes-Barre is just down the road a few miles from Hazleton and it can almost be ensured that this proposal is aimed at groups like Voice of the People USA who have been holding rallies and protests against illegal immigration.

In response, Voice of the People USA is holding a rally this Thursday at the city council meeting to oppose their free speech tax and all are invited. Every American should oppose such implementation of laws like this that seek to shut down the expression of free speech in this country.

Here are the rally details and statement from Dan Smeriglio, founder of Voice of the People.

I want to remind you that this Thursday Feb. 28th at 5:30pm, Voice of the People USA Political Action Committee returns to blast a city council that wants to charge hard working American citizens in excess of a thousand dollars just to utilize our rights of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly! Now more than ever we must stand up against those who wish to oppress all of us!
Politicians want all of us to gather and come out in droves on election day, after that they could care a less about what we have to say! Let's remind them that brave men and women have fought and continue to fight for our god given rights as Americans, how dare this city council slap every American in the face and how dare we allow them to do so! I ask you all to join us and stand up for our rights as citizens of the greatest country in the world!

Let's show them that they cannot and will not silence, the voice of the people!
