School District Warns Students Against Reprise Of Walkouts
School District Warns Students Against Reprise Of Immigration Walkouts
(March 27, 2007)--The Dallas Independent School District is warning students they'll be punished if they repeat last year's immigration protest walkouts.
About 10,000 students walked out of their classes a year ago to attend rallies protesting federal immigration policies.
Superintendent Michael Hinojosa lays out possible disciplinary measures in a letter to students and parents.
Students who leave class face punishment that could include suspension, detention, restriction from extracurricular and graduation activities and community service.
The students last year were protesting proposed federal legislation that would have made being in the country illegally a felony crime.
The bill has been tabled.
Hinojosa says the protesters met their goal of bringing awareness to immigration issues and encouraged students to pursue their cause through education.
