Whenever parents violate the law -- the immigration law or any other -- they put their innocent children at risk. However, we all understand that children are not human shields, and that parents cannot be exempted from the consequences of their actions because punishing them might have some negative effect on their kids. In every other situation we would hold the parent responsible for any negative ramifications on children, and we must do the same in Ms. Arellano's case.

It is also important to understand exactly who Elvira Arellano is. She is a woman who came to this country illegally. She was apprehended by the authorities and given the benefit of a deportation hearing before she was removed from the country. After being deported from this country, she again entered the country illegally. It was after her return to the U.S. that Ms. Arellano gave birth to a child.

Upon returning to the U.S. illegally, Ms. Arellano obtained fraudulent documents and used those false documents to gain employment at O'Hare Airport -- a security sensitive location in the post-9/11 world. She was apprehended a second time by immigration authorities, given the benefit of a second deportation proceeding and was ordered deported again. Rather than comply with the order, she chose to hide in a church. Although the government had a perfect right to execute the second deportation order against her while she was in the church they chose not to touch her so long as she remained there.

However, Ms. Arellano was not satisfied with the status quo. She was interested in making herself a political martyr, which was evident by the fact that she and her supporters announced to the world that she was coming out. She was not coming out to take her son to the doctor, or anything else to do with the welfare of the boy. Rather, she publicly announced that she was coming out of the church to make a political statement. For all intents and purposes, Ms. Arellano was daring the government to execute the deportation order.

It is clear that Ms. Arellano and her supporters thought they were in a win-win situation. If the government did not act, then they would have created a showdown with the immigration authorities and forced the government to back down. If the government arrested her, they believed that they would create an outpouring of public sympathy and force a change in policy.

The government did arrest and deport her, but the American public is not rallying to her cause. The American public recognizes that Ms. Arellano and her supporters were exploiting the condition of the boy for political purposes. People do not take kindly to having their emotions manipulated for such obvious purposes.

It is not the government's action that has divided the Arellano family, but rather Ms. Arellano who has created the situation. She and her son can be reunited at any time in Mexico. The child, who is recognized as a citizen under the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment is free to return to this country at any time.

Ms. Arellano and her handlers are trying to portray her as a modern day Rosa Parks standing up for her rights. Ms. Arellano is no Rosa Parks. Ms. Arellano's situation has nothing to do with her race, religion or ethnicity. Rather, her situation is a result of her refusal to respect the immigration laws of this country that apply to all foreigners, irrespective of who they are or where they came from.

The American people understand that our immigration laws are there to protect the interests of the nation and, therefore, must be enforced. Their minds are not likely to be changed by transparent efforts to exploit the condition of a sick child for political gain.

This is what was never clear to me: Just what is little Saul supposed to be suffering from?

All I've ever heard is that he was diagnosed with ADHD. That is enough to make one suspicious right there given the extremely high rate of misdiagnosis concerning both ADD and ADHD.

It's even more suspicious given the "exploitation for benefits" the children of illegals endure. Find an illegal with an ADD or ADHD diagnosis on their anchor and you'll most likely find a Social Security disability check behind it.

You mean that the courts let her stay in the country for 5 years just because he had ADHD. Send them both to Mexico. Enough is enough, now just 19M 999 thousand 999 to go.

This is the most overused excuse for children who have never been taught and then made to sit their little over-sugared butts down and behave. I am so sick of hearing excuses from people as to why their kids can't behave and participate in normal life.

I was in junior high and my post-hippy school counselor had us working as peer counselors with severely mentally disabled students they were trying to maintream. The parents of these kids and the teachers even expected them to learn to behave appropriately and gave them little excuse to do anything less. They did learn to behave nicely and participate. So if they can, so can these supposed ADD/ADHD "vicitms".

Right! Couldn't agree more!!! Its an excuse for parents who did a crappy job on raising there brats!!! It seems that parents now days cave to any crying whiny little monster instead of saying "NO!" Parents see to give up and give in.

They bring them too the doctors and ask whats wrong with little "Johnny?"
Doctor say, "Well little Johnny has ADHD and will have to go on these "pills" for the rest of his life!" "Oh my but I don't have health insurance" mom says!
Doctor says "he needs these pills to do good in school and to be a productive member of society, so you better take out a second mortgage or get a third job because he needs it!"
"Well ok" mom says!

Doctors get paid by pushing on pharmaceutical companies drugs over another... There are sales people that go to hospitals, doctors offices, and all types of other medical practices to "push" there drugs to these doctors to use on his/her patients! If the doctor pushes them well they get "bonuses!" Now isn't that a conflict of interest? Whats more important the health and safety of your patients or your bank account? Well we know the answer to that!!!

BorderLegionairre, so true, it has a lot to do with money. The few doctors who I have spoke to about the theory of ADHD/ADD who obviously did not tkae any kick backs from pharmeceutical companies, said that it is a highly over used diagnosis and they felt the main problem was too much junk food in kids diets, lack of excercise and too much tv and video games.

If parents would shut off cable, take away all video games, clean up their diets, these same kids would find things to do with that energy and last but not least, the parents need to ACTUALLY spend time teaching their kids about sitting still, we would not have kids running around this country all drugged up.

My kids ask for a snack, I tell them "sure, there's carrots and apples in the fridge, go for it". My kids DO NOT have video games, at all, and we do not make a habit of buying ANY movies. Saves mom and dad money and makes them get out and move around (well, our 14 year old son currently has a full-time job, so kind of doesn ot apply to him).

BTW BorderLegionairre, I once told a friend that ADD/ADHD should be called the "I need a butt whipping disorder" for some kids (maybe really that applies to the parents for not taking command of them).

ADD/ADHD is a pretend disease for pharmaceuticals to make money and for stupid parents who can't properly raise their children to use as an excuse.

The ADD/ADHD drugs are methamphetamine which is an illegal street drug that has been proven to cause brain damage among other serious negative long term effects in users.

And touching on Elivra's "my son has add and needs to stay in the US for treatment" lines she should have no trouble finding methamphetamine in mexico.

I agree with the drugs issue, none of that stuff can possibly be good for ANYONE. I stopped even having my kids immunized when I found out that most of the immunization was grown in monkey renal cells and/or fetal cells, as well as using mercury and formaldehyde as preservatives, and boy do doctors REALLY push you when they find out you do not get immunizations, it is almost like the Spanish Inquisition!
