A 23-year-old Butte Falls man was stabbed in downtown Medford early Sunday morning and died after being hospitalized, leading to the arrest of one suspect while another remains at large.

Medford police say Mark Edward Lunsford died at 4:51 a.m. at Providence Medford Medical Center after extensive surgery following a knife wound to his lower chest and upper stomach area.

Medford police arrested Luis Alberto Salas-Juarez, 23, of the 700 block of East Jackson Street in Medford, charging him with one count of murder. He is lodged in the Jackson County jail without bail.

Lunsford was formerly a football star at Butte Falls High School.

The stabbing occurred at 2:47 a.m. near the corner of Bartlett and East Main streets in the Theater Alley area after Lunsford and the suspect exchanged words and a fight broke out, Medford police Lt. Tim George said.
