Observations from an English as a second language teacher

    Hello all,
As a fairly liberal person, my transformation to an all-out supporter of the Minuteman group and ALIPAC has occurred as a result of working with immigrants as an adult education instructor in a majority-Hispanic city (El Monte, CA) and living in Pasadena, CA, which has always had a large Hispanic community. Once sympathetic, I'm now fully convinced that something must be done, due to the percentage of undocumented Hispanic aliens I've encountered who don't seem willing to assimilate, expect the rest of us to adapt to their languge and culture, and don't see a reason to follow the rules of their host (yes, HOST) country.

Over the past two days I've encountered problems during errands around town and getting to work that I haven't seen on such a scale. On Sunday a large Hispanic woman tried to push me out of line at the gas station I go to regularly. Fortunately, the Tanzanian attendant saw what happened and waited on me first. Also on Sunday while biking for exercise a young Hispanic woman screeched around a corner against a red light and almost ran me down in a crosswalk. Yesterday while at a Chinese restaurant near work a teenager with her mom made a loud and nasty comment in Spanish that they shouldn't have to wait for the "old white woman". Finally, at the El Pollo Loco near work I was in line behind a young woman wearing a tee shirt with a nice silk screen of the L.A. skyline and the caption: "por l'amor de Los Angeles Reconquistamos nuestra Jerusalem".
    Nuff said, don't you think?

I've lived here most of my life and fear from what I've witnessed that things might get ugly as illegal visitors gain courage from the failure of our leaders to set adequate limits and prosecute those who violate our laws. We see it in classes, as students come and go without regard for attendance rules and punctuality, and continue to converse in Spanish when asked to practice English with their Asian classmates (not all, but the majority, and all the teachers have noted this). I sincerely hope that we can work this out and set limits before things simmer to a boil.

    Sincerely,
    (mod edit)

Welcome! Yes they are changing America into a place I don't know anymore and feel we have "understood" and had "compassion" long enough for our "poor friends" across the border. They do not appear to be prompted by kind words or grateful for any oppertunity this country gives. They've proven any kind and compassionate route to end this problem is impossible because they want to take over. The government HAS to take a HARD stance because they won't hesitate to mow us over.

It's a great thing you're doing, standing up for our country and YOUR RIGHTS as an American!

Your letter is actually inspiring. Sadly, for most people, their eyes don't open until it affects their personal lives.

The most important & urgent matter that I gained from what you've written is the "child" and the attitude that she's being taught.

*** Multiply that disrespect by millions and we have a generation of trouble coming our way that is absolutely disasterous! It could bring violence to another level that most Americans have never seen if they've not been in a combat situation.

THANK YOU for taking the time to share your front line experiences.

Meredit, welcome to the forum. I know exactly what you mean. I was born and raised in California and lived there until last year. I was living in Altadena when I moved.

I just couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to move to a new place, but there was no place to go. Every community from Pasadena to Wilmington and all points east and west are overrun with Latinos.

A lot of my family is still there, including my mother. I keep trying to talk my mom into joining me in Atlanta, but she's old and afraid.

My sister is one of those the more the merrier kind of people so she's not concerned with the immigrants. So its just me and my daughter in Atlanta and although its not immigrant free, they are not quite so bold as they are in California and there are not so many. You can still find a house in a neighborhood where there are all races, but everybody is American.

I just wanted to let you know that there are more people just like you and feel free to vent anytime.

At least your Governor has some courage!! Hopefully, he'll rub off on a few others!

Btw, one of my boys is in Atlanta. 1/2 of our family's been in Georgia/Alabama since the mid 1600s.

    Hi Sherbug,

Whoa, you were in the thick of it and congratulations for getting out. Never thought I'd say that, as a life-long liberal. Thank you for your support and a shoulder.

At the end of my doctoral studies the engine in my car gave out, so I've been traveling by bus for over a year (next week the car will be back, and not a moment too soon). Nice folks in the morning- even a British medical researcher. The afternoon is enough to make you pull your hair out. Across from the very nice adult school where I teach a mixed group awaits the bus at noon, among them Latino gang members with rucksacks who've been released from jail and mothers with several toddlers, all on Medi-Cal (there's a clinic day for kids at the county health dept. in Downey). OMG, I can barely afford my health insurance premiums and they get free medical care. A student at the school rode for several weeks, explaining that he's undocumented and got stopped. He's back to driving and nowhere to be seen. I did my best, explaining why operating a vehicle while undocumented, uninsured, and unlicensed is unethical, but he caved. So did a female former student- too dangerous to commute by bus after dark. So when they hit my car how do I collect for damages? Low income, no accessible resources... wow.

Best wishes for a happy life in your new home. Are we being forced to flee our homes, like you, to avoid the mass migration and the crime that comes with it? Romney's the only candidate willing to talk about a sustantial fix- have never voted for a Republican...

Why should they change their ways? They did not come over the border legally, they came as illegals. No one asked them to speak English, they are encouraged to speak their native tongue. And they have enough demographic power to transform whole cities into third world ***holes. They get free food stamps, welfare, don't pay no taxes. They work, or make babies, and watch spanish TV,pay no taxes and live a life 200x better than Mexico or S. America. Why would they want to learn 'white mans language'? Whites are a minority in California, the trend is toward hispanics, who are illegal and speak spanish. They are catered to in every way. No worries for them.

This has nothing to do with 'hispanics, metiztos' etc.

It has to do with the Democrats , chamber of (illegal) commerce, Retardican party supporting them.

The answer is, as most people have found out, MOVE. The rats have taken over your house, and your not allowed to kick them out. You leave or get bit. Your choice.

Totally amazing this post is dated 5/16/2006 and our politicians are still hard at work defending what they are doing to this Country. Boiling point is about what it is at. Sadly it is way past simmer
