Dear XXXXX,
Thank you for contacting me about H.R 997, the English Language Unity Act of 2009. I appreciate hearing from you.
H.R 997 was introduced by Representative Steve King on February 11, 2009. This bill would state that English is the official language of the United States, and would require that official functions of the United States be conducted in English, and that all naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor and the House Committee on the Judiciary, and has not yet been introduced to the full body of the House for consideration. I will keep your position in mind if this legislation is brought before the full House for consideration.
Again, thank you for being in touch, and I hope to see you in Maine soon.
Sincerely,
Chellie Pingree
