As some of you know, my husband is a hispanic american whose family has been here for four generations and he does not speak spanish. Some of the hispanics here have made comments about how he is "white-washed" and has "lost his ethnicity." Wow, I didn't know that only "white" americans conformed to society. The spanish speaking kids at my daughter's school are mean to her at times because she has a hispanic name and looks hispanic, but does not speak spanish. I have never seen the likes of this mentality, in my home state of Michigan most hispanic americans from the 2nd generation on down do not speak spanish because it is just seen as comforming to society.

I have never lived in such a backwards society where there are people who try to make us feel guilty for being american and living by society's standards. It is bad enough that they make white racial comments towards me for being white, but they have an even worse attitude toward my family just because they are hispanic americans who solely speak the national language which is English.

Last I knew, a national language is what unites society and if you want to be understood you must conform to those standards. If that were not the case, I would be sitting here typing in the cherokee or saxon language right now. Most african americans would be speaking swahili or some african language and even the Mexicans would be speaking something else, they would be speaking mayan or aztec.
