Mortgage E-Verify Act introduced

Mortgage E-Verify Act introduced
On Thursday, February 4th, I introduced H.R. 4586, the Mortgage E-Verify Act. The bill, which has 22 cosponsors, would require, as a condition for modification of a home mortgage loan held by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac or insured under the National Housing Act, that the mortgagor be verified under the E-Verify program. Though I support making e-verify permanent for use in hiring, e-verify is an important tool which I believe can be used to stop fraud and abuse in the mortgage industry. Illegal immigrants who already illegally obtained mortgages should not be getting their government-backed mortgages reworked.
