Did Sarah Palin desecrate a flag?

The Tea Party icon may have signed her name on Old Glory at a campaign rally.
Wouldn't that be illegal?

The video: During a Tea Party rally on Wednesday in Reno, Nev., Sarah Palin took questions from the media while signing autographs — at least one of which appeared to be on an American flag. As the video spread around the internet, critics quickly accused the conserative star of violating subsection 8, part (g) of the Flag Code, which reads: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." Did this advocate for "pro-American" Americans inadvertently commit an unpatriotic crime?

The reaction: "The evidence is imperfect," says Emma Mustich at Salon, "but if she did put her signature on Old Glory, it would be a clear violation." So what, says Richard Adams at The Guardian. The Flag Code is breached all the time. That said, if Palin "supports a constitutional amendment to outlaw burning or desecrating the American flag, then she may have to place herself under citizen's arrest in order to remain ideologically consistent." This really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Where was this guy when the illegals had the flag on the ground drawing communist symbols and propaganda? NOWHERE.

Oh my God. Did she really do that? She signed her name on a flag? I seem to remember an illegal putting a toilet seat on our flag. But thats O.K. cause the illegal was standing up for her rights in a country that she has no right to be in and she has no respect for. I wonder if when she went to the welfare office she told them about the little stunt she pulled.

Great question! My guess is he was right there cheering them on, writting about their perceived right to freely express themselves through "art!"

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, unless it is the ensign responding to a salute from a ship of a foreign nation. This tradition comes from the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, where countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII: the American team flag bearer, Ralph Rose, refused in support of an Irish boycott over Great Britain's refusal to grant Irish independence, and teammate Martin Sheridan is often stated as famously proclaiming that "this flag dips to no earthly king."[1] This tradition was codified as early as the 1911 U.S. Army drill regulations.[2]
The flag should never be displayed with the union (the starred blue union) down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.[3]
The flag should not be used as "wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery",[1] or for covering a speaker's desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins). Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be drawn back or bunched up in any way.
The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.

In a parade, the flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle, railroad train, or boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.[5]
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.
The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
If the flag is being used at a public or private estate, it should not be hung (unless at half staff or when an all weather flag is displayed[6]) during rain or violent weather.
When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. The American Legion, Boy Scouts of America[7], Girl Scouts of the USA[8] and other organizations regularly conduct dignified flag-burning ceremonies, often on Flag Day, June 14.
The flag should never touch anything beneath it. Contrary to an urban legend, the flag code does not state that a flag that touches the ground should be burned. Instead, the flag should be moved so it is not touching the ground.[9]
The flag should always be permitted to fall freely. (An understandable exception was made during the Apollo moon landings when the flag hung from an extensible horizontal bar, allowing full display even in the absence of an atmosphere.)[10] . . .

As Michelle Obama has been "forgiven" for soliciting votes in a polling place, I forgive Sarah Palin for signing the flag.

It is not because I am a huge supporter of Sarah Palin, but the nitpicking level of bashing of her has become infantile, petty and shockingly beneath the dignity of sane, adult American citizens. Besides, she knows which hand to use to salute the flag and doesn't give an insulting crotch clutch. This attack smacks of Jr High School. JMO

As we come down to the most important mid term election of our time, we can expect to see scum sucking bottom dwellers rise to the surface to defame, slur, lie, spread rumors, etc. The real winners and leaders will take to the high road, reject gutter sniping and essentially project themselves as common sense, level headed adults. This attack or whatever you want to call it, against Sarah Palin was juvenile. If a group of American veterans or heroes signed a flag, would there be anyone with an ounce of dignity and honor in their bodies, slur these veterans? I think not. Take the high road.

Agreed! Unfortunately for the people who write and believe this trash, they have no idea what the high road is. Liberals too steeped in ignorance to have any idea what's really going on.
