In the new Germany, Christmas markets need terror-proof tables and massive concrete barriers

After the move of dressing up large cement blocks as presents in 2017 and again now, it comes as no surprised that some Christmas markets look like high security military bases.

But the country has become somewhat more creative in disguising its anti-terror measures.
In Ulm two tonne concrete birds are supposed to protect Christmas market visitors from terror attacks. One city officially commented that it was not about increasing security measures but about more “beautiful” security.

In Bautzen a similar approach with concrete Christmas trees was taken for safety purposes calling them a more “elegant” solution to concrete blocks.
The police in Dusseldorf are currently testing anti-terror standing tables. Their spokesperson called it a “creative” idea needing to be tested for its effectiveness.

Berlin de facto converted its Christmas market to a military base but then decided to decorate some of its new anti-terror barriers in more festive ways.

Germany’s increased anti-terror measures on Christmas markets show how mass Islamic migration threatens the country’s traditions. After the 2016 terror attack on Berlin’s Christmas market, by a Muslim terrorist there have been more incidents.
Recently a man with a hatchet shouted Allahu Akbar on a Christmas market and migrants fought with Germans on a Christmas market in Ludwigslust.

UK Issues Travel Warning for Christmas Markets Across Europe Including Germany, France

The UK government has warned British citizens to “remain vigilant” in crowded places including Christmas markets while in Germany, France, and eight other European Union countries.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which is in charge of promoting British interests overseas, updated their travel advice on Monday, with the vast majority of Christmas market warnings being in Western European countries that have been affected by the migrant crisis and recent Islamist terrorism.
The warning for Germany reads: “There is a general threat from terrorism.
FRANCE 24 International Affairs Editor Philip Turle gives his analysis

“There may be increased security in place over the Christmas and New Year period, including at Christmas markets and other major events that might attract large crowds.
“You should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.”
France’s warning adds that “Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures.”

Other countries where the FCO warned vigilance around Christmas markets are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden.
There was a warning to be vigilant during the Christmas period whilst in Spain, but there was no specific mention of Christmas markets. The remaining 16 EU nations — mostly in Eastern Europe — had no such warnings.
The FCO states that information for its travel advice comes from “a number of sources including local knowledge from our embassies abroad and in some cases information gathered by the intelligence services.”
Christmas markets across Western Europe have been under tight security since Tunisian failed asylum seeker Anis Amri, who travelled from Italy to Germany with the 2015 migrant flow, drove a truck into Berlin’s crowded Christmas market on December 19th, 2016, killing 12 people and injuring 56 others.
Video later surfaced of Amri swearing allegiance to Islamic State.

The terror attack prompted towns and cities across Germany to install anti-terror barriers — nicknamed “diversity barriers” — ‘wrapped’ for Christmas to look like gifts, with similar devices being erected in Britain in time for Christmas 2017.
Before Christmas last year, six members of an Islamic State cell were arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning a terror attack, possibly against a Christmas market, with another plot against a British Christmas market foiled the day before.
The raids came after Islamic State had threatened holiday attacks against New York City, London, and Berlin.
