    * Report on Pete wilson statue ceremony *

Two San Diego Minutemen confirm that 40 open border protesters were located about 30 yards away from the ceremony and due to their amplified drums and chants, the ceremony was difficult to hear. Many dignitaries were there such as San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders, congressmen Duncan Hunter and Darryl Issa and other high class friends of Pete Wilson. I am sure they were very irritated by the protesters.
Of course it will only help our cause even more!

Today the wealthy and refined elites got a taste of the open-border freaks. Hopefully this will make them get off their a$$ and start being more active.

Of course Pete Wilson is right, illegal immigration is just that, ILLEGAL. And those historically ignorant pro-illegal alien protestors should be ashamed of themselves for trying (& failing) to equate Governor Wilson with a Nazi for trying to uphold our just laws.

Did that reporter say there were a couple hundred protestors?

More like 40 as LawEnforcer stated above.

Think many more eyes were opened today by that rude ugly demonstration.

The reporting didn't portray how many Mexican flags there were nor the Aztlan t-shirts.

It was a sight (and sound) that was not good for their cause!

And I would think Mayor Sanders was embarrassed by the obvious out of control situation his city has become.

The pro-illegal alien extremist crowd continues to be very brazen, which I believe just further awakens more and more Americans to the fact that we finally have to secure the border and enforce our immigration laws.

Unveiling of Statue of Gov. Wilson Draws Protesters

The unveiling of a statue of former Gov. Pete Wilson at Horton Square drew protesters upset over the Republican's record on immigration and gay rights.

The $200,000 bronze of Wilson, also a former San Diego mayor and two-term U.S. Senator, was paid for with gifts from more than 200 donors.

Supporters of the monument say it pays tribute to Wilson's role in revitalizing downtown San Diego.

"Everywhere you look downtown you see tangible examples of the legacy Governor Wilson left behind," said Kurt Bardella, an aide to Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Carlsbad, who is handling the event.

During a recent San Diego City Council meeting, Enrique Morones of the group Border Angels said the statue promotes "hate." He chastised Wilson for championing of Proposition 187, which sought to deny government services, including public educations, to illegal immigrants.

Though the 1994 initiative was approved by voters, most of it was ruled unconstitutional. The few provisions left intact -- mainly aimed at cracking down on document mills -- have been largely unenforced.

"Would the city of San Diego allow a Confederate flag in front of the Malcolm X Library?" Morones asked the City Council last month. "Would the city of San Diego allow a statue of Adolph Hitler in front of a Jewish temple?

Then why would a Pete Wilson statue be in the heart of a city that is one-third Latino?"

Homosexuals accuse Wilson of ignoring them when he was mayor from 1971 to 1983 and while he was governor.

Bardella said the statue is meant to "commemorate" and "celebrate" Wilson's legacy. He said he was unconcerned about protesters.

"People are going to do what they want to do," Bardella said. "This is meant to be a positive thing."

George Biagi, an aide to Mayor Jerry Sanders, said San Diego police are prepared to respond to any situation.

Protesters, Supporters Gather As Wilson Statue Is Unveiled

SAN DIEGO -- Protesters and supporters gathered by the hundred Saturday as former Gov. Pete Wilson unveiled a statue of himself.

Outside Horton Plaza, the shopping center developed by Wilson and credited with transforming downtown, about 300 immigration and gay-rights activists pounded drums and shouted slogans.

"Pete Wilson has been about white supremacy all along," said Olin Tezcatlipoca, director of the Los Angeles-based Mexica Movement. "It is racist to honor this guy."

Charles Mallon, a 77-year-old San Carlos resident, said, "I want to honor Pete Wilson. He was my mayor and my governor and he did a lot for the people of this state. Now these people down here are trying to say he's a bad man, and he's not."

Wilson was a three-term mayor of San Diego who later served two terms as a U.S. senator before being elected as California's governor in 1991. He made an unsuccessful White House bid in 1995.

Immigrant rights activists were angered when Wilson championed Proposition 187, the 1994 initiative passed by voters that aimed to prevent undocumented immigrants receiving social services. The measure was ruled unconstitutional.

Gay rights activists claim Wilson ignored them during his three terms as mayor.

The statue was installed on the grounds of an office building by Horton Plaza. At the unveiling ceremony, an audience of roughly 500 lifted cups of champagne to the former mayor.

Wilson said he was proud of the overhaul of downtown.

"View this statue, as I will, as a surrogate recipient of the tribute that's deserved by all of you who shared the dream, who made it come true and gave all the proud neighborhoods of San Diego the vibrant heart they needed," Wilson said.

Wilson joked that his statue would make pigeons happy.

Police arrested one protester for disobeying an order to get out of the street.

The bronze statue shows a younger Wilson smiling. More than 200 private donors contributed $200,000 to pay for the likeness.
