Growing immigration law firm helps Michigan compete on a global level

Growing immigration law firm helps Michigan compete on a global level

Fragomen, Del Rey Bernsen and Loewy LLP, an immigration law firm, just got bigger. The firm recently acquired the Atlanta and Washington offices of its main competitor, Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP.

“This is an exciting time for us,” said Scott Cooper, managing attorney and immigration expert in Fragomen’s Troy office. “With this acquisition, we now represent all three of the Detroit automakers, along with other global OEM’s and an expanded number of Tier 1 and 2 suppliers on immigration matters.”

In 2011, Fragomen was named immigration law firm of the year by U.S. News and World Report for its work helping companies overcome challenges to recruiting, hiring and retaining sought-after immigrant students and staffers.

In addition to the Detroit 3, the firm handles employment matters worldwide for a large number of multinational Fortune 100 companies in other industries, emerging companies, academic, cultural and research institutions, as well as entrepreneurs and investors.

Cooper says that Michigan is home to a number of global corporations that require a highly skilled workforce, which includes a growing number of foreign nationals who play a critical role in the turnaround success of the automotive industry. These individuals continue to drive technological innovation in the region; however, current federal and state laws have made it difficult for employers to accommodate documented immigrants with prized skills and expertise.

Fragomen attorneys counsel these and other clients, helping them recruit and retain international students and others who can contribute to the local and national economy and help position Michigan and the country as a leading innovator on the global stage. They also work with immigrant entrepreneurs and investors, guiding them as they navigate an increasingly complex legal and political environment.

“Every human resource professional in our area recognizes the shortage of skilled workers and that, until enough U.S. workers are available with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and math fields, employers will need to turn to consider working through the visa sponsorship process.” Cooper adds.

Fragomen’s Troy office and staff recently relocated within the city to 50 W. Big Beaver, Suite 200, inside the Liberty Center in expanded premises, implementing leading edge technologies in their practice area.

“Our goal is to better serve our local and global clients, ensuring their needs are met by providing outstanding guidance with the very latest tools and resources available to us,” said Cooper. “Our new location will allow us to do this effectively and to the best of our abilities.”

In addition to the Troy office, Fragomen operates 39 offices in 15 countries and employs more than 1,000 legal professionals. All of the offices are linked by proprietary immigration-specific technology. Continued...
