Thread: Is there any truth to this rumour?

I know there are a lot of ALIPACers from Portland, Oregon. I need your help in either confirming or dispelling a rumour from the Portland metro area.

An acquaintance of mine sent me this e-mail this morning:

Mr. JECG_97030,

A Tri-Met bus driver told me yesterday that Tuality Hospital
had checked its employees against a government data base and found 33
illegals on its housekeeping staff; they were fired at once. Can you
verify this?

Let me know if anyone has information on this. If its true, we need to shower the management with Thanks for standing strong and obeying the law. I really need a credible source to confirm this, if it is true.

Well, if the hospital indeed found out the employees were illegal AND the status checking were not done or prompted by ICE or some other law enforcement body, then that would seem to make sense (they'd want to do this quietly and with as little attention as possible).

Only people within the Hospital's administrative section would likely be able to confirm or deny this (IMHO).

So ???? - don't know. It doesn't seem to add up.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think it's a false rumour. Too Bad. I reached out to Lars Larson, Jeff Kropf, Rob Kramer and Victoria Taft to see if they have heard anything from their newrooms.

By the way, how can we get the national media (Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, etc.) to add Kulongoski's plan for illegal alien driver licenses to the uproar over Spitzer's plan? It seems like he needs to feel the heat for having the same stupid idea as Spitzer. I think wimpy Ted K would crumble if he got heat similar to the New York sellout!

After a little more investigating, maybe there are more twists under the surface than what I initially assumed.

Facts:

The jobs posted by Tuality Hospital (Healthcare) are hosted on a site called Unicru (.com) This is a local company that specialized in doing employment recruiting/staffing for a variety of industries in the local area. They focused typically on low-skilled, hard to find positions for the most part (by memory).

Second, Unicru was bought up by a company called Kronos - a larger player in the same basic area, but with wider ranging services and is international in scope. So, when you plug in http://www.unicru.com into the browser, the link forwards you to: http://www.kronos.com

Withing the Kronos webpages, there is a link to their "Talent Management Services" division (the thing that used to be 'Unicru' apparently).

Much of the service type falls into the category of 'headhunter', bodyshop type offerings.

So if we put 2 + 2 together, it appears that Tuality Healthcare/Hospital was using Unicru to advertise and potentially staff positions. Whether people within those organizations were involved and/or cognizant of who/what they were hiring...? well, that will take more investigating work I'm sure.

jecg: You should find out from your inquirer/source, HOW do they know of this rumor and how it can be confirmed.

She heard it from a Tri-Met driver. That's all I know. Maybe a brave news reporter will dig into this and find out.

A couple thoughts... Lars has talked about it on/off for a few weeks now.

I personally (yes, selfish local interests prevailing here) would like to do the same that we have done for NY and Spitzer on this issue. It really is quite similar. One or two differences on the local situation is/are, that -

a). There already exists some entrenched opposition to it here.
(See recently posted article written by OR Reps Kim Thatcher and Linda Flores - here on the forum).

b). Most of the noises I've heard out of Salem suggest that most legislators and the Governor are willing to go along with the provision of Real ID - which would basically force their hand in complying with laws which would make it difficult if not impossible for illegals to get OR DLs (well, legally).

c). The Governor's other background noise (the knowledge of the Neil Goldschmidt / babysitter affair) is also a sore point for him at the moment.
I haven't heard that confirmed officially or whether he is being investigated - (well, yet...). But, the event a week or two ago when he was asked about it at a news conference, and just turned his back and walked away speaks volumes to me. In short, he's already distracted and really busy.
... It might be a good time to press the issue.

I would call the hospital HR Dept and tell them that you heard through a "rumor" that they were employing illegals----and that you and many others plan on contacting ICE and asking them to do an investigation!!

this really isn't a bad idea, it shows the public.... us are watching and we want our laws enforced.
