SACRAMENTO, CA - The U.S. Border Patrol was recruiting at the Embassy Suites in Sacramento Saturday, looking for qualified job applicants.

Recruiters want to fill at least 600 open positions by the end of 2008. It's all part of a push started by President Bush to make sure the U.S. border is fully protected. In June 2006, Bush promised to increase the Border Patrol by 6,000 agents. The reinforcements would make the U.S. Border Patrol 18,000 strong.

"We're strong right now. We're at 17,400, more or less," said U.S. Border Patrol Agent Socorro Donadio. "There's a lot of us out here, but we need more people."

Donadio said the job is perfect for someone who doesn't want to sit behind a desk all day.

"So if you are looking for a job and you like to work outdoors, this is a great opportunity for you right now," Donadio said.

An applicant must be a U.S. citizen, must possess a valid state driver's license and Must be under the age 40 to register to take a written test.

U.S. Border Patrol salaries start from $36,000 to $46,000 a year. Within three years of service, a border patrol agent can earn up to $70,000 a year.
