Numbers Alert: Fill those voicemail boxes tonight!!!

GOP Senate Leaders McConnell & Lott on verge of deal to bring amnesty back up for vote
Friends,
Pres. Bush's meeting with Republican Senators at noon appears to be providing just the extra push that pro-amnesty leaders have wanted.
The Senate's top two Republican leaders -- McConnell (R-Ky.) and Lott (R-Miss.) -- are using this opportunity to pull 15 Republicans (of the 38 who voted against amnesty last week) back to Pres. Bush's side.
McConnell and Lott hope to get those 15 to sign off on a list of amendments they want brought up for a vote.
They hope to present that list to Democratic leader Sen. Reid (D-Nev.) by tonight!
To slow this down, please phone Republican Senators on the list below THIS MINUTE.
202-224-3121
When you think about it, the deal that Mcconnell and Lott are offering makes little sense. They are basically saying that they want the 15 Republican Senators to agree to vote for cloture in exchange for a chance to have their favorite amendments voted down. Many of those same Senators may vote against the final bill (when it will take 50 votes to defeat it), but their promise to Bush, McConnell and Lott will be that they will vote FOR cloture (when it would take only 39 votes to defeat it).
In other words, they will vote for the amnesty in the tally where their NO vote would have the most possibility of defeating the bill.
Please call these Republicans and urge them to refuse any deal that wins their YES vote on another cloture vote.

FROM CONGRESS DAILY THIS AFTERNOON
Secretary Tony Snow sounded a note of optimism, saying most of the major provisions have passed with more than the necessary 60 votes. "Last week's vote on cloture was opposed by a number of Republicans, not because they opposed the bill but because they opposed shutting off debate," Snow said. "They thought that it was important to consider further amendments."
To that end, Senate Republican negotiators were close to agreeing on the number of amendments they want to bring up and could present that list to Reid as early as this evening, a GOP leadership aide said today.
The negotiators will meet at 5 p.m. to craft the list, which is expected to be in the range of 10 to 20 amendments. Democrats would be allowed an equal number of amendments under the emerging deal. The Republican list would likely include amendments dealing with enhanced enforcement triggers, an earlier "touchback" requirement for illegal immigrants seeking legal status, and a "fix" to an amendment that passed last week by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., to sunset the bill's guestworker program. GOP aides said if Reid accepts their debate terms, the Republican votes are there to support another cloture motion to stop a filibuster on the immigration debate. But some of the amendments, if approved, might dissolve the fragile coalition that cobbled together the compromise legislation.
Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., said last week's 15-vote deficit on the failed cloture motion does not reflect the will of the Republican Party. He pointed to another vote rejecting an amendment by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., to strike the legalization provisions, which would have killed the deal. On that vote, 26 Republicans voted to sustain the immigration compromise.

Just called Huchison's office. 'The office is closed, please call back.' I have been emailing her and her staff. She has aspirations to run for governor of Texas in 2010. If she does not speak out against this shamnesty, she will have no political career to salvage. Also informed her staff they will be looking for jobs 'that no American will do.'

I just called a bunch of senators on the list with Roy's points. Some of the voice mail boxes are full, so I called their state offices. Keep calling, please!

Today I've spoken to staffers of Enzi( He didn't vote, so I said he was obviously for Amnesty. But his office said that was like voting no. I told her his constituents and the American people need his 1 vote against a bill that was written for the mobs of Illegal aliens that demanded rights while they march on American streets) Also spoke to staffers of Lott, Domenci, McConnell, Brownback (didn't vote and was he going to stand with the people of Kansas and America or with business and the Amnesty and Open Borders Advocates), Isakson, Craig, Cappo, Reid, Gregg, Burr. Webb, Landriew and Kyl. (They haven't made up their minds yet) I have yet to speak to someone in Chambliss's offices.

Some Republicans and Democrats who voted not to shut off debate are privately committed to amnesty, if they can be given political cover and face-saving amendments to take home. We have to work harder and have faith that some of these Senators still have a conscience and cannot be responsible for the death of the American republic.
Time to cross-check olivermyboy's list.

This is from a just off the wire AP report (evening, 6/12) that may shine a little light on the "deal" they are supposedly working on. (BTW, I wish they would just ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS. This all seems to be an attempt at political cover to push their amnesty scheme):
--------------------------------------
After an early evening negotiating session between Republican and Democratic senators, Sen. Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record), R-S.C., said the group is trying to craft an amendment to assure Americans that the bill will include ample funding for tighter border security and tougher workplace enforcement. The plan could involve "pre-funding" the effort with billions of dollars eventually to be repaid through fines and fees, he said, or through a more traditional supplemental spending bill, such as those recently used to pay for the Iraq war.
Graham said the bipartisan negotiators also are looking at harsher penalties for immigrants who overstay their visas or re-enter the country illegally. "If you had mandatory jail time" for such offenses, he said, "I think it would create a deterrent."
Another possible amendment, Graham said, would ban employers from participating in a new temporary worker program if they repeatedly break the law by hiring illegal workers.
"I'm looking for ways to break the cycle of skepticism" among those who feel a new immigration law would be as poorly enforced as the 1986 law, he said.
The administration pushed back against Republican critics of the bill later Tuesday. In a letter to nine conservative senators who bitterly oppose the measure, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the administration has committed manpower and money to improving border security and enforcement, and needs the immigration bill to step up its efforts.
"Failure to act on this legislation will deny the country the safety and security provided by these enhanced enforcement measures," Chertoff wrote.
