Jose Antonia Vargas is a celebrity illegal alien residing in the United States. Why is DHS allowing him to openly flaunt our immigration laws? Deporting illegal immigrant talking heads like Mr. Vargas will weaken the voice of folks openly subverting our written immigration laws.

Vargas just appeared on Fox's Tucker Carlton show last week.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson and refugee advocate Jose Antonio Vargas got into a heated argument on Tuesday night when the Fox News host started off the interview by asking, “What would happen if I showed up in the Philippines, as a non-citizen, there illegally and started saying, ‘Hey Philippines, I hate your immigration policy?”

Vargas, a journalist who once wrote a New York Times column detailing his life as an undocumented immigrant, responded that he was only 12 years old when he came to America, so he wouldn’t have asked those kind of questions.

Vargas attempted to explain the relationship between America and the Philippines when Carlson asked him to answer his initial question. Vargas fired back, “Tucker, do you think I came to this country so you could beat me up and call me illegal and criminal on national television?”

Carlson chuckled and said, “I’m hardly beating you up,” as Vargas asked, “How do you legalize people you call illegal?”
Carlson told Vargas he was contradicting himself by saying the country has the right to protect it’s boarders while “simultaneously” arguing that illegal immigrants should not be referred to as illegal.

“Being here without documentation and authorization is a civil offense and not a criminal one,” Vargas said.
“OK, whatever, it’s still against the law,” Carlson responded. “What’s your point?”

Vargas went on to tell Carlson, “You don’t operate in facts,” and argued he’s simply a pundit, which is different from a journalist. He then started to explain that the history of America impacts how the country should treat immigrants.

“You claim to be a journalist,” Carlson said at one point. “Tell me why the United States, like many countries around the world, once had slavery, a grave sin, it doesn’t have a right to control who comes across it’s boarders?”

The two went on to fight about it for a few more minutes, with Vargas telling Carlson he doesn’t deal with context.

Me too. I also hate that our federal government allows him to openly flaunt our immigration laws! If the Trump administration is serious about attacking our illegal immigrant problem, they'll deport this guy. Of course I imagine they're too afraid because of the negative publicity it would generate. Illegal alien mouthpieces like Vargas just make our mission all the tougher. :roll:

Jose Antonio Vargas trumpeted that he was an undocumented immigrant for years. But authorities never apprehended him.

Until now.

On Tuesday, U.S. Border Patrol agents detained the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist-turned-activist in McAllen, Texas, after he told them he was in the country illegally,officials said. He was released on his own recognizance with a notice to appear before an immigration judge, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

Vargas was detained Tuesday morning at the McAllen airport while trying to pass through security en route to Los Angeles, said Ryan Eller, campaign director for Define American, a group Vargas founded in 2011.

Vargas became an outspoken advocate pushing for an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws in 2011, when he revealed he was undocumented in a column for The New York Times Magazine.
Recently, he detailed his life story in "Documented," a film about the U.S. immigration debate that he wrote and directed. CNN aired it on June 29.

Vargas said in a statement released by a spokesperson Tuesday evening that he had been released.
"I want to thank everyone who stands by me and the undocumented immigrants of south Texas and across the country," he said. "Our daily lives are filled with fear in simple acts such as getting on an airplane to go home to our family."

Even with his high profile and frequent speaking events about his immigration status, Vargas hadn't found himself in the cross hairs of authorities until his trip this month to the border region to support unaccompanied minors coming from Central America.

"Mr. Vargas has not previously been arrested by (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) nor has the agency ever issued a detainer on him or encountered him," the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday. "ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the agency's resources to promote border security and to identify and remove criminal individuals who pose a threat to public safety and national security."

Tania Chavez, an undocumented youth leader who met with Vargas recently and has accompanied him around the McAllen area, told CNN that he was detained because he did not have proper documentation.

It was a possibility Vargas feared after he arrived in the region.

"Because I don't have any ID besides my Filipino passport, it's going to be hard for me to actually get out of here at some point when I decide to get out of here in the next couple of days," he told CNN on Sunday.

Early Tuesday, Vargas tweeted that he was about to go through security at McAllen-Miller International Airport. Since outing himself as an undocumented immigrant three years ago, he says he has traveled extensively, visiting 40 states.

"I don't know what's going to happen," he tweeted, directing his followers to the Twitter handles for Define American and the University of Texas-Pan American's Minority Affairs Council.

Within minutes, the latter retweeted a photo of Vargas in handcuffs with the caption: "Here's a photo of (Vargas) in handcuffs, because the Border Patrol has nothing more pressing to do apparently."
In Politico last week, Vargas wrote a piece headlined "Trapped on the Border."

The story documents how he went to McAllen to visit a shelter where undocumented immigrant children were being held. He also wanted to share his "story of coming to the United States as an unaccompanied minor from the Philippines," he wrote for Politico.

Once in McAllen, he spoke to Chavez, who expressed concern that he might not make it through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoints about 45 minutes outside McAllen.

"Even if you tell them you're a U.S. citizen, they will ask you follow-up questions if they don't believe you," Chavez told him, according to the Politico piece.

"In the last 24 hours I realize that, for an undocumented immigrant like me, getting out of a border town in Texas -- by plane or by land -- won't be easy. It might, in fact, be impossible," he wrote Friday.

Vargas, Define American and other groups traveled to McAllen to "stand in solidarity with and humanize the stories of the children and families fleeing the most dangerous regions of Central America," Eller told reporters Tuesday. Vargas told CNN on Sunday that he traveled to McAllen to document the plight of refugees.

Before he went to bed Monday, Vargas told Eller, "Our America is better than this. We're more humane. We're more compassionate. And we're fighting for a better America, a country we love but has yet to recognize us," the Define American campaign director recalled Tuesday.

At 12, Vargas came to the United States from the Philippines in 1993 with a man he'd never met but whom his aunt and a family friend introduced as his uncle, wrote in his 2011 New York Times Magazine column.

Once in the States, he lived with his grandfather, a security guard, and grandmother, a food server. Both were naturalized American citizens who had been supporting Vargas and his mother since Vargas was 3. He'd later learn that his grandfather had paid $4,500 for this purported uncle -- who was a coyote, or people smuggler -- to bring Vargas to the United States under a fake passport and name.
"After I arrived in Mountain View, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, I entered sixth grade and quickly grew to love my new home, family and culture. I discovered a passion for language, though it was hard to learn the difference between formal English and American slang," Vargas wrote for the magazine.

One of his earliest memories, he wrote, was a schoolmate asking him, "What's up?" He replied, "The sky."

Vargas says he didn't know he was in the country illegally until he was 16, when he applied for a driver's license and was told his green card was bogus. He went home and asked his grandfather whether that was true, according to the magazine story.

"Lolo was a proud man, and I saw the shame on his face as he told me he purchased the card, along with other fake documents, for me. 'Don't show it to other people,' he warned," Vargas wrote.
Vargas has written for numerous publications as a journalist, including The New Yorker. He interned for The Seattle Times and worked for The Huffington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Philadelphia Daily News.

In 2008, he was part of the Washington Post team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its breaking news coverage of the previous year's shooting rampage at Virginia Tech. Vargas got bylines on two of the nine stories the Pulitzer board cited.

"Over the past 14 years, I've graduated from high school and college and built a career as a journalist, interviewing some of the most famous people in the country," he wrote in his 2011 magazine piece. "On the surface, I've created a good life. I've lived the American dream. But I am still an undocumented immigrant."

Supposedly, according to the article above, he already has a court order to appear before an immigration judge. That order was issued over 2 years ago. If I was AG Sessions, I'd see that the date was expedited. As the new Attorney General, I believe that is within Sessions realm of responsibility.

Yeah, that's a line he needs to jump to the front of.

This is my country, too.

That's why I decided show up and bear witness to President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress. Whether the Trump administration and his allies on Capitol Hill realize it or not — whether our elected officials are willing to face irrefutable facts and the human stories behind them — undocumented immigrants live in all parts of the country, and we help make America great.

During Trump's speech, I sat in the gallery of the House's hallowed chamber alongside other immigrants whose lives are directly affected by Trump's executive orders, at the invitation of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California. I grew up in the San Francisco area and for years lived in Pelosi's district. But my decision to accept her invitation was not made lightly, considering the terror that the Trump administration has inflicted on immigrant families. As the country's "most famous illegal alien," as Lou Dobbs once called me, some of the lawyers advising me suggested I lie low. "Don't go on cable news as much," they said. "Let's see how all of this shakes out." My 79-year-old grandmother took it one step further. Shortly after the election, my lola ("grandmother" in Tagalog) asked me to go into some kind of hiding.

"I am done hiding," I told her.

I decided to show up Tuesday night because that's what immigrants, undocumented and documented, do: We show up. Despite the obvious risks and palpable fear, we show up to work, to school, to church, to our communities, in big cities and rural towns. We show up, and we participate. This joint session of Congress was a quintessential American moment at a critical juncture in our history. I was honored to attend and remind our elected leaders and everyone watching that immigration, at its core, is about families and love — the sacrifices of our families, and the love that we feel for a country we consider our home although it labels us "aliens."

We show up even though we're unwanted, even when most Americans don't understand the pull-push factors of migration and why we come here in the first place. (No discussion of Trump's "America First" worldview can be complete without first examining how U.S. foreign policy and trade agreements affect why people move.) We show up even though many Americans, especially white Americans with their own immigrant backgrounds, can't seem to see the common threads between why we show up and why they showed up, at a time when showing up did not require visas and the Border Patrol didn't exist yet.

Our presence inside the Capitol in front of Trump is among the everyday acts of resistance that we are witnessing across the country. There are the undocumented workers showing up in industries that depend on our labor, including the more than 100 workers nationwide who lost their jobs while participating in A Day Without Immigrants protests. Undocumented students are showing up in high school classrooms and on college campuses. Others are in places that have made it clear that "illegals" are not wanted there. And undocumented parishioners are seeking refuge in places of worship, like Jeanette Vizguerra, the mother of four who has found sanctuary inside the First Unitarian Church in Denver. ("Supposedly, I am a criminal because I drove without a license, because I had expired stickers on my car, because I had false documents to work and put food on the table for my children," Vizguerra has said.) When our bodies are seen as mere "labor," when our presence is broadly "criminalized," our very existence is an act of resistance.

Our existence is a repudiation of the myths, misinformation and outright lies that many Americans wrongly believe about this country's undocumented population.


The myth is that we are a burden to society, taxing welfare and social services. The reality is that undocumented workers pay billions in state and federal taxes and contribute billions more to Social Security. The Social Security Administration estimates that undocumented workers have paid $100 billion in paycheck deductions over the past decade. We pay into the system even though we won't benefit from it.

The myth is that we pose a threat to national security and cause harm and danger in communities — a myth that Trump perpetuated throughout his campaign and continued to push Tuesday night, when half of his guests in the House chamber were relatives of people killed by undocumented immigrants. The reality is that study after study shows that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes and be incarcerated than native-born Americans.

The myth is that the "crisis" of immigration is all about Mexico and building that great, big, beautiful wall. The reality is that at least 40 percent of the undocumented population arrived legally and overstayed their visas, and that the fastest-growing undocumented population is Asian immigrants. I'm from the Philippines; my wall was the Pacific Ocean, and I crossed it simply by getting on an airplane. Like me, the majority of the adult undocumented population has lived in the United States for more than 10 years.

The myth is that we are making a mockery of this country's laws and openly flaunting our illegality. "Why can't you just get legal and become a citizen?" is among the questions I am most frequently asked, both by people who want me deported and people who consider me as American as them. It's a question that strikes at the core of deep-seated ignorance that many citizens have of this complex issue. The reality is that demands to "get legal" and "become a citizen" are just as complicated, depending on each immigrant's own specific circumstances, as our outdated immigration system, which Congress has not reformed since the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

The myth is that there are "good immigrants" and "bad immigrants," as if people are easily divisible and definable as "illegal" and "legal," when the reality is that definitions we use and divisions we make speak to the inhumanity of a broken system.

Am I a "good immigrant" because I am more assimilated (whatever that means) and speak better English than my lola — who, by the way, is a U.S. citizen? Millions of American citizens like mylola live in households with undocumented family members. How do you separate undocumented Americans who were brought illegally to the United States as children from their undocumented parents, who risked everything so their kids could have a better future? If we are to "show great heart," as Trump has said, to the DREAMers (named after a bill that Congress never passed called the DREAM Act), shouldn't we also show our heart and offer our gratitude to their parents? When Trump promises to "fight for the safety of every American" and protect the American people first, is he referring to the U.S. citizens whose undocumented parents face detention and deportation because of his executive orders?

I carried these questions with me as I sat in the gallery. I also carried the generosity of Americans — of all races and backgrounds, all political persuasions — who, in my nearly 24 years in this country, never needed laws or pieces of papers to treat me as a human being, as if I were one of their own. Undocumented people like me rely on our allies in innumerable ways. My showing up on Tuesday night was possible partly because my allies always showed up for me. My showing up on Tuesday night was about the kind of citizenship that is not limited by documents and laws.

Shortly after I arrived in the United States in 1993, during one of my middle-school classes, I learned that the Capitol building is considered the "People's House." On Tuesday night, as we undocumented immigrants are every night across this country, I was one of the people in this house.

Vargas was born in Antipolo^[9] in the Philippines. In 1993, when Vargas was twelve, his mother sent him to live with his grandparents in the U.S. without obtaining authorization for him to stay in the country permanently; his grandparents were naturalized U.S. citizens.

He should have gone home to the Phillipines to be with his family a long time ago. I just saw a special on CNN about the Philippines, on Anthony Bourdain show, Phillipines is very nice country. Wonderful people. He would be very happy and successful there. They need good journalism.

8 Reasons Why Jose Antonio Vargas Won't Be Deported

On Tuesday morning, Jose Antonio Vargas, one of the most prominent and vocal undocumented immigrants in the United States, was detained at a Texas airportafter traveling there to report on the plight of unaccompanied minors crossing the border. The Border Patrol took him into custody when he showed them a Filipino passport and no other form of identification. This was one of the few times Vargas, who self-identifies as the "most privileged" undocumented immigrant in the US, has had that privilege seriously questioned. He was released on Tuesday evening and issued a statement through his nonprofit organization, Define American:

I've been released by Border Patrol. I want to thank everyone who stands by me and the undocumented immigrants of south Texas and across the country. Our daily lives are filled with fear in simple acts such as getting on an airplane to go home to our family.

Vargas reminds those watching his case that he is representative of so many more undocumented children. But there are also many reasons why his is a special case—and why he won't be deported:

1. He's a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and a celebrity.​
2. He's been detained, and released, before: Two years ago, a year after he revealed his status as an undocumented Filipino immigrant, Vargas was driving through Minneapolis without a legal license while wearing headphones,according to MinnPost. Although the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office was signed up for a Bush administration initiative called Secure Communities that encourages local law enforcement to hold booked undocumented immigrants for ICE, Vargas was released after roughly five hours. It's unclear how much information authorities had about Vargas' citizenship, though MinnPost points out that it was unusual for police to haul him in, given that those suspected of driving without a license tend to be issued a citation on the scene.
3. He's dared the ICE to deport him, and it did nothing: As Vox points out, Vargas essentially surrendered to the feds in 2012 when he called ICE and "asked what the government wanted to do with him." The agency declined to comment. Technically, they can come knocking anytime they want to deport him, and they have not done so.
4. He's not a priority: The Obama administration claims it prioritizes cases having to do with "national security, public safety, and border security," including repeat offenders who have crossed the border after deportation, convicted criminals, and "recent border crossers." Vargas doesn't fit these descriptions, considering he's been convicted of no crime and has lived in the United States since he was 12 years old. (Though CBP has its own policies on what constitutes a recent border crosser, prioritizing any unauthorized entry regardless of how long ago it occurred.)
5. The courts are already backlogged: As MoJo's Stephanie Mencimer wrote earlier this week, immigration courts are drowning in cases, especially with the sudden influx of unaccompanied minors. There are currently 30 vacancies on the immigration bench, dozens more judges eligible for retirement, and a backlog of 375,503 cases—up 50,000 since 2013. A case like Vargas' could've sat around for years before it was addressed.
6. Prosecutorial discretion might have favored him anyway: Even if Vargas' case were taken up by ICE, the government could have chosen at any time not to proceed. ICE can waive deportation in cases where a defendant has "positive priorities," including status as a veteran, longtime US residency, a degree from a US college or university, or even just "ties to the United States," including a "role in the community" or "work as a volunteer." Vargas arrived as an undocumented minor and was unaware of his status until he was older. He's been a journalist since he was 17. He's a graduate of San Francisco State University. And now he's the founder of nonprofit advocacy group Define American. Not only does he fit many of the positive criterion, he doesn't fit into the clearly defined "negative" categories: He is not a clear threat to national security, a gang member, or a convicted criminal.
7. He has a slew of lawyers, immigration groups, and public figures supporting him: Chris Rickerd, a policy council expert in the American Civil Liberties Union, says Vargas' "equities are such that he should be allowed to continue his stay in the US." Cristina Jimenez, a representative of the youth immigration group United We Dream, declared in a statement: "We stand in solidarity with Jose Antonio and demand for his immediate release, but we must remember that there are thousands of people along the border that live with this same fear every day." New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio alsoannounced his support for Vargas in a public statement Tuesday, describing him as an "exemplary man whose tireless work has helped raise awareness around the lives of millions of undocumented immigrants living on American soil" and encouraging authorities to use discretion when it came to his case.
8. He'd be a giant headache when the government already has plenty. (See also No. 1.) We'll just have to see if the outcry over Vargas' release would be any less of a headache for the Obama administration than his deportation might have been.

MW, ICE apparently was fed up with recent antics from several illegal alien activist hitting the news cycles making demands
and ICE responded with them being detained and processed for deportation.

With my fingers crossed, I am hoping ICE has the same frustration with this guy and aggressively goes after him.

Seriously, I guess they have to wait until his immigration court ruling comes down. Of course it's been over two years since he was given a court date. No idea when his actual court date is and as far as I can tell he isn't saying.

As I said in an earlier post, Attorney General Sessions needs to expedite his immigration court date!

Flaunting his face all over TV bragging how he violates immigration laws and at the same time demanding
benefits only encourages others to break the law and not fear being picked up for deportation.

Our government needs to show lawlessness will not be tolerated and politics does not give waivers.

Hire a new immigration judge for his district and bump him to the head of the line for "interfering in our democracy". If Obama can deport 35 Russian diplomats for "interfering in our democracy", legal immigrants they were too, then an illegal alien can be deported for 1) being here illegally and 2) on a rapid deportation for "interfering in our democracy". If he has a problem with that, he can sue US .... from the Philippines.

Aside from wanting parents added now, he digs it was never passed but as we all know is enacted by stays from deportation, work permits etc.

No illegal within our borders illegally should be able to legalize themselves. I know there have been exceptions for folks claiming abuse and through marriage. However, typically the law does not allow for it. And that is as it should be (IMO).

A new campaign wants to throw a massive coming out party for America’s undocumented immigrants.

Define American, the organization founded by journalist and immigrant rights activist Jose Antonio Vargas, launched a campaign Wednesday encouraging the nation’s 11.5 million undocumented immigrants to “come out” by declaring their status.

The initiative was introduced in a video featuring several immigrants announcing their undocumented status.

On a press call, Vargas called the campaign “unprecedented in scope” and emphasized the importance of telling individual stories to change perceptions of undocumented immigrants. “We ‘come out’ to let people in,” he said.

Jessica Lee, an undocumented woman featured in the video, expressed feeling more fulfilled after coming out. “You can’t be your full self when you’re hiding,” she said on the call.

But is it really practical for all 11.5 million undocumented immigrants to shout their status from the hilltops? Vargas, who owns a Pulitzer Prize and has written for the The New York Times, enjoys visibility in the media and is not exactly immigration authorities’ most immediate target. (He wasdetained last summer in a Texas airport and let go the same day.)

“The positives [of coming out] are that there is a community you’re visible to. If something happens to you, people know,” said Luis Serrano, an organizer with the Immigrant Youth Coalition of Los Angeles, about the campaign. “The negatives are people can lose their jobs.”

“We shouldn’t impose [coming out] on people. Some people have a higher risk than others,” said Serrano.

Ryan Eller, the executive director of Define American, acknowledged that coming out isn’t for everyone. “Coming out is a personal decision and there are certainly risks that come along with it,” he said.

Vargas also acknowledged those risks. “Coming out doesn’t mean getting on the corner of 15th and Pennsylvania and putting a sign up saying ‘I’m undocumented,’” said he said. “It means telling a friend.”

You think only of yourselves. You give no thought to Americans, who lost jobs to you, who lost hours to you, who lost earnings to you, who love seats in college to you, who lost everything to you. You are not Americans. Americans don't do that. Americans have always fought for each other, Americans have always stood up for improving our country with more jobs, higher wages, better educations, innovation, justice, equality for each other. There can be no toleration on any level of illegal aliens in our nation or future illegal immigration. All illegal aliens must be deported and none allowed future entry. Doing the right thing is hard sometimes, but the right thing for Americans to do is require deportation of all illegal aliens without mercy or exception and the right thing for illegal aliens to do is thank US for the time you were here and go home to your own countries like dignified people.

"RESIDENT ALIEN."


Those two words, in all caps, adorn the plastic-covered green card that my grandfather, a naturalized U.S. citizen, handed me shortly after I arrived in the United States from the Philippines. I was 12. I don't remember thinking much about the card (which was not green) or the words (which, strung together, seemed like the title of a video game or a movie). It wasn't until four years later, while applying to get a driver's permit, that I learned the card was fake. I wasn't a "RESIDENT ALIEN" at all but another kind of alien — in common parlance, an "illegal alien."

The label "alien" is nothing but alienating. And when coupled with "illegal," it's especially toxic. The words seep into the psyche, sometimes to the point of paralysis. They're dehumanizing.

A few days before last week's GOP debate in which Fox News anchor Chris Wallace and presidential candidates Mike Huckabee andDonald Trump casually referred to immigrants as "illegals," I received an email from Bank of America, which I've been using since high school. (Yes, undocumented immigrants can open bank accounts.) "Ready to buy a home?" the subject line read. (And, yes, undocumented immigrants can also purchase homes.) I stared at the email, closed it, opened it again and wondered: Am I ready to buy a home in a country that regards me as an "illegal," with official government forms that call people like me an "alien"?


At least California is abandoning such harsh language. This week Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that strips the word "alien" from the state's labor code. The bill's author, Sen. Tony Mendoza(D-Artesia), said the legislation was necessary to move California into line with evolving attitudes toward immigrants.

As he told The Times: " 'Alien' is now commonly considered a derogatory term for a foreign-born person and has very negative connotations. The United States is a country of immigrants who not only form an integral part of our culture and society but are also critical contributors to our economic success."

Mendoza, a first-generation American and the son of Mexican migrant workers, told me that he introduced SB 432 in February, shortly after he realized that the state labor code still uses "alien." The use of that word, he learned, dates to the 1930s, when a hiring hierarchy was created among the state's labor workers for government jobs. If you were a U.S. citizen from California, you got top priority. Second priority went to U.S. citizens from another state. Then, last of all, the "aliens."
Language frames the political conversation. And more humane language can lead to more humane policies, and vice versa.


"Given how integral those workers were in the 1930s — and given how central undocumented workers are to our economy now — that word is unnecessary. It's disrespectful. It's degrading," said Mendoza, who is chairman of the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee.

There are those who say that "alien" is a perfectly fine, neutral term, and that anyone who finds it offensive is playing word police and should just check the dictionary. The second definition, in Merriam Webster: "from another country." Sting's pop song, "Englishman in New York," joyfully repeats "I'm a legal alien" in the chorus. Ian Whitcomb, another English pop singer, wrote a memoir called "Resident Alien."

Usage, however, changes along with social norms. Lawmakers wouldn't dream of using the word "retarded" to describe someone who's intellectually challenged, even though, decades ago, they used it regularly without giving offense. Words can take on negative connotations; "retarded" did — and "alien" has too.

Striking "alien" from the state labor code is a symbolic step that other states and the federal government should follow.

Of course, changing a word here and there can't fully address the tangible problems facing the country's undocumented population. But language frames the political conversation. And more humane language can lead to more humane policies, and vice versa.

While Congress dithers on immigration reform, this state, home to about 3 million undocumented immigrants, is embracing an essential yet marginalized part of its population. In the last few years, with strong bipartisan support and decreasing opposition, the state Legislature has passed bills granting undocumented immigrants access to driver's licenses, in-state college tuition and healthcare for children. Brown has also signed legislation allowing noncitizens in high school to serve as election poll workers (greatly increasing the pool of people who speak languages aside from English) and protecting the rights of immigrant minors in civil lawsuits.

The message is unequivocal: We are not "aliens" to this state. We are residents of California.

JOSE VARGAS TO BENEFIT FROM OBAMA’S IMMIGRATION RELIEF ORDER


WASHINGTON – The most visible undocumented Filipino in America may soon have temporary legal status and a work permit.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Filipino journalist Jose Antonio Vargas is one of the five million undocumented immigrants who will directly benefit from President Barack Obama’s executive action laid out on Thursday night.

Obama’s administrative relief will allow qualified undocumented immigrants the chance to stay temporarily in the US for three years, provided they pass background checks and pay back taxes.

“This is not amnesty. It’s only temporary. It doesn’t provide a green card. It doesn’t provide citizenship. It doesn’t provide healthcare. It doesn’t provide anything really, except free from deportation, a work permit, people can drive, people can travel hopefully and again not to live in fear,” Vargas of Define American said.

Vargas, who didn’t make the cut to Obama’s initial Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program because he was over the 30-year-old age limit, is now eligible under this new expanded program.

The Department of Homeland Security is expanding DACA so that people like Vargas – people were brought into the US as children – can apply if they entered before Jan. 1, 2010, regardless of how old they are today.

DACA relief is good for three years.

Vargas said he looks forward to see his mother whom he hasn’t seen in 21 years.

“I fantasize about getting into a plane and go to the Philippines and thinking like what would happen. I don’t even know what would happen to me,” he said.

Vargas joined civil rights leaders such as Reverend Al Sharpton in Washington DC on Thursday afternoon to welcome President Obama’s executive action on immigration hours before the president’s primetime speech.

“Today is a day of victory for the American people,” said Rev. Sharpton. “I’ve said to them on the other side of this equation – pass a bill. But while you are deliberating, the president is acting, and activists are with the president.

Meantime, Consul General Mario De Leon said the Philippine Consulate in New York is planning to host a town hall meeting to educate the Filipino community on the president’s action.

“We want to know how is the procedure, and at the same time, how long does it takes, and who are eligible,” said De Leon. “So in other words, we have to answer a lot of questions first, and if they fall into that, then we could provide guidelines from there.

Obama said that this is only a temporary fix. It’s still up to Congress to pass legislation that would provide long term solutions to fix the broken US immigration system.

“If this doesn’t jumpstart legislations in immigration, I don’t know what will,” Vargas said.

Why aren't states enforcing our driving laws. Some states allow them DL, but many don't. Why can't they charge them with having a fake ID?

I'm pretty sure that is a no no under the patriot act and all states.

Why not charge them if they have a fake SS#?

Are they working? If so, have they paid the applicable taxes?

What about their employers - why not go after them?

If a person stands up and brags he/she is an illegal alien and they have a job - go after the employer. They might be able to plead they had no knowledge, but the government could then demand they clear all their employees.

Again, why are we pretending their only law breaking activity is just being here.

You're absolutely right. It is virtually impossible for an illegal that has been here for years to not break other laws. Their very survival here depends on breaking the law. If you're part of a drug trafficking cartel, you broke the law. If you're gainfully employed, you and your employer have broke the law. If you drive but reside in a state that doesn't issue a driver's permit or license to illegals, you broke the law. If you lied on a federal or state form to obtain benefits or aid you're not entitled to, you broke the law. If you've used a fake SSN, you broke the law. If you've accepted work payment under the table, you broke the law. The list goes on and on.

It was a phony but effective exploitation of the "race card".

If you were white and against illegal immigration, you were a racist.

If you were black and against illegal immigration, you weren't standing with people of "color".

If you were Hispanic and against illegal immigration, you were forsaking your "ethnic heritage".

Until about 11 years ago, no one knew how to fight it, and then one day someone said, "hey hold on a damn minute, that dog won't hunt!" and things started to change, slowly but surely.

And, this candidate won the majority votes in over 30 states and became the 45th President of the United States on November 8, 2016.

Now 12 years later as of March 2017, this President Donald J Trump is fighting every foe on every front to do just that.

We didn't have TV for some time and my son got us hooked up
to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.

One of the shows we can watch is 'Blue Bloods'. I was watching an episode two nights ago. There were 2 Mexican women who were standing in front of a hotel in NYC and someone stole their luggage. The young police officer heard them screaming and ran to find out what happened.

The said they were just 2 Mexico women and no one would care-------------

The young officer was helping them and told his partner he was helping them because they were two women who came here from another country. He said imagine how it feels to come here with all the talk of 'building a wall', etc. He wanted to let them know that NY was friendly and welcomed everyone.

Another show off my list - another actor (Tom Selleck) is now off my list. I consider it treason to take part in such anti-American rhetoric.

Law and Order had similar statements in their show - and I really liked that show.

The entertainment media has been brainwashing people for many, many years with just such things. We should have stopped it long ago.

Yes, if you have cable, satellite, Netflix, etc., you are paying for all the propaganda that is working to harm this country, if you never click on the show. Many of these could not stand on their own - they must be subsidized.

Now, let's ask ourselves how we arrived at the point, we were paying for the rope that is hanging us?

We do it when we purchase products produced by illegals.

When we watch media that supports it and degrades Americans.

When we pay local taxes and do not get involved and stopping our local entities (schools, cities, counties & states) from aiding and abetting.

When we vote for politicians just because they say they are Republicans or Democrats.

When we continue to allow our churches to openly aid and abet these criminals.

We need to wake up and take action.

It really isn't that hard to stop watching media that promotes things detrimental to our country. It may be a little harder to just stop, or curtail purchases from businesses that do the same.

It might take some doing, but it could become habit - good habit.
