Attention:

I object to the underhanded way HB 2939 will be voted on today. Not enough public discussion about this bill has been made available to the public for review. If this government wants transparency we must provide it to the general public, actions like this will no longer be tolerated by the American public.
In-state tuition for illegal aliens is wrong because it replaces innocent American students in the limited seats in college. If my children cannot get into college for free why on earth would we allow Non-Citizens to do this? Have we all lost our common sense?
The bill violates a 1996 Federal law, which will cost Oregon millions to defend in court.
The measure will attract more illegal aliens into America and Oregon, thus creating a larger demand for additional social services! Look at what is happening in California! Is this what you want for the fine state of Oregon? I sure hope not.
Why train illegal aliens for jobs that it is illegal for them to have, especially at a time when over 11 Million+ Americans are out of work and American families are struggling to pay for college. They cannot work in America without a Valid social security card! So this will mean that they either go back to the country where they came from or worse yet use someone else’s SSN!
I strongly urge you to do what is right for the American public and defeat this bill as well as any other attempt to legalize anyone in this country illegally.
It is not our right to choose which laws we choose to enforce, we must enforce them all and obey them all this is what makes America the nation it is! A nation of laws.

How many people have actually read this bill before posting how horrible a bill it is?
Here is the address to the Oregon House of Reps' page with this measure on it: http://www.leg.state.or.us/09reg/measur ... intro.html
It specifially states that:
(a) During the five years immediately prior to receiving a high school diploma or leaving school before receiving a high school diploma, attended an elementary or a secondary school in this state and resided in this state;
(b) Received a high school diploma from a secondary school in this state or received the equivalent of a high school diploma;
(c) Did not establish residency outside this state after receiving a high school diploma or leaving school before receiving a high school diploma;
AND
(d) Plans, as determined by the board by rule, to become a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
Although I do not agree with people coming into this country without papers, or overstaying their visas when they HAVE come into this country with papers, we are talking about kids that are wanting to go to college, to make a good life for themselves, to have a better education so that they have more options than to end up on welfare. Most of these children did not come into this country by themselves. They didn't have the choice. They were brought here. Some of them don't ever realize they are without papers. I hate calling children illegal because they didn't commit the crime, their parents did. If they do know they are undocumented, or find out, to qualify for this plan they have to plan on becoming citizens or lawful residents of the US.
This bill shows very clearly they are not going to be giving this status to those that just showed up last week and want to go to college at an in-state tuition cost. And they aren't getting this education for free. They have to have graduated from an Oregon school and been a part of Oregon's community. This makes their legal address in Oregon, not out of state. Why charge them out of state tuition when they have been living here for X amount of years.[/url]
