Hispanic Dems: Let's show Trump this 'sleeping giant' is awake

House Hispanic Democrats said Wednesday it is a good time to be a Latino in America, but Republican nominee Donald Trump is a "cloud hanging over us."

In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins Thursday, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (Calif.) said at a press conference, "in our books, being of Latino heritage, of Mexican heritage, of Nicaraguan heritage, is actually a good thing. I guess in the minds of some people, it’s not a good thing, and it limits what you are able to do in this country."

Reps. Tony Cárdenas (Calif.), Michelle Luján Grisham (N.M.) and Norma Torres (Calif.) joined Becerra, taking turns speaking about Latino heritage, praising Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and lambasting Trump.

"This week, here in Washington, D.C. we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. But yet at the same time, we have this cloud hanging over us, where we have someone who has made it to be the nominee to one of the two largest political parties," said Cárdenas, adding, "and yet all he has to say about Latinos, Hispanos, are negative things."

Luján Grisham said Hispanic entrepreneurial culture has been the backbone of New Mexico's economy.

"Building when it is really tough, is an indication about what a community can achieve despite almost insurmountable odds," she said.

Guatemalan-born Torres referenced the Hispanic electorate's large numbers but relatively small voter participation rates.

"To the Latinos out there, too often, we have allowed people, like Donald Trump, to label us. Stop. Let’s show Donald Trump that this sleeping giant, that everyone talks about, is awake, and that he is responsible for it," Torres said.

Trump's campaign has made immigration and Latino issues central to the election. At his announcement in June of last year, he called Mexican immigrants "rapists" who "bring crime," and promised to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

But Latino voters are expected to play a key role in several swing states, raising their relevance in the presidential race.

Trump has at times reached out to Latinos — most notoriously with his Cinco de Mayo taco bowl tweet — and rephrased his rhetoric on immigration, but has remained adamant about building a border wall.

"His insults are direct and obvious," said Becerra. "His attempts to compensate are just as insulting. He can't hide who he is."

Oh good grief. There is nothing special about you because you are Latino or Hispanic. If you're American that is all that matters, and the only Sleeping Giant on the roll now is Donald J Trump, who is always Awake, because he doesn't want to sleep through or miss any work that needs to be done.

What Trump has done is unite America across all the lines that Democrats have created to divide our country. Democrats have a race-based organization for anything that walks and talks.

Trump doesn't want a vote from someone based on their race group. He wants their vote because they're American and he wants to fix our country!! There's no special way to talk to black people or Latino people or Asian people. If you're American you'll be talked with the same way anyone is talked with. Why wouldn't you be?!

Hispanic Americans are fed up with illegal immigration and bad trade deals, the same as everyone else. I think Hispanic and Latino Americans are going to see that Trump is the one to fix our country and if they love our country and want to see it doing better, which I think they do, they will vote for Donald J Trump in large numbers.
