$600,000 bail set in slaying case

    Friday, July 7, 2006

CAMDEN -- Bail was held at $600,000 cash or bond today for an illegal Mexican immigrant charged with the fatal stabbing of another man in Camden on the afternoon of July 2.

Edgar Rojas, 20, who had lived in the 500 block of Pfeiffer Street was arrested on a murder charge in Philadelphia last week and returned Monday to Camden County Jail.

His arraignment was delayed because of the state court shutdown.

Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Ira Slovin said Rojas had no valid documentation to be in the us.

    Tuesday, July 4, 2006

    CAMDEN
A Camden resident who authorities say stabbed another man to death has been charged with murder.

Edgar Rojas, 20, of the 500 block of Pfeiffer Street, was sent to Camden County Jail on $600,000 bail. He will be arraigned Wednesday.

Rojas is charged with killing Andres Marquez, 20, of Camden, shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Pfeiffer Street in East Camden, Acting Camden County Prosecutor James P. Lynch said.

The stabbing occurred during an argument about broken windows to a vehicle that belonged to one of Marquez's friends, Lynch said.

Police found Marquez lying in the street bleeding from the stomach. He was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. at Cooper University Hospital.

Bail holds for alien charged in slaying

    By RENEE WINKLER
    Courier-Post Staff

    CAMDEN
Bail was held at $600,000 cash or bond on Friday for Edgar Rojas, an illegal Mexican immigrant charged with the fatal stabbing of another man on a Camden street on the afternoon of July 2.

The victim, Andres Marques, 20, died five hours later after life support efforts at Cooper University Hospital failed. No street address was available for Marques.

Rojas, also 20, who had lived in the 500 block of Pfeiffer Street, was arrested on the murder charge the next day. His arraignment was delayed until Friday because of the statewide shutdown of state offices due to the budget impasse.

At the hearing before Superior Court Judge Robert Millenky, Rojas laid his head on the counsel table and wept. Deputy Public Defender James Farmer, summoned to the court by Millenky to represent Rojas for the bail hearing, patted the defendant on the back.

Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Ira Slovin said a witness did not know Rojas by name but saw him thrust a knife into the victim. The same witness said Rojas had threatened a group of people with a knife earlier on July 2. Both incidents took place on the street near the house where Rojas lived and reportedly followed a dispute over damage to a car that was owned by a friend of the victim.

Rojas told police he had the knife in his possession that day but was unaware that anyone was injured, according to a probable cause statement. During a search of Rojas' apartment, police found seven knives, including one believed to be the murder weapon, and Rojas' clothing packed in plastic bags.

The prosecutor said Rojas carried an immigration card with his photograph but other information on the card was not his.

In keeping the bail at $600,000, an amount set earlier in the week by a judge on emergency duty, Millenky found Rojas was a potential flight risk.
