Sixteen Cuban migrants on board a rustic vessel were interdicted near Anguilla Cay on Friday by the U.S. Coast Guard and brought to the Lucayan Harbour and handed over to the local Immigration Department.

On Saturday evening around 8:30 p.m., a team of Immigration Officers from Grand Bahama headed to the Lucayan Harbour to collect a third group of Cuban migrants interdicted by the U.S. Coast Guard this month.

“The U.S. Cutter Robert Yared handed over the 15 males and one female, all of Cuban nationality after they were intercepted in the area of Anguilla Cay, Cay Sal Bank on board a rustic vessel on Friday,” confirmed Napthali Cooper, Immigration Officer, Grade One.

Cooper further informed that the group claimed to have departed from Cuba en route to Florida on Sunday, April 17.

“After the group was taken in to custody at the Lucayan Harbour, the Immigration Officers assisted by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Marine Division transported the 15 migrants to Immigration Headquarters to be processed overnight,” Cooper disclosed.

The local Immigration Officer established that subsequent to processing, the migrants will be transported to the capital island of New Providence and be housed at the Detention Centre until repatriated to Cuba.

The Grand Bahama Immigration Department have now processed 69 Cubans since January 2016, two thirds of them during the month of April.
