Border patrol agent attacked by man attempting to cross into the country illegally

RIO GRANDE CITY — A Guatemalan national was arrested Saturday after he attacked a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station, authorities say.

Agents responded to an area of thick brush about 11.30 p.m. after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and the Office of Air and Marine helicopter observed a group of suspected immigrants crossing the Rio Grande, according to court documents.

Three agents arrived and began searching for the group and one agent, known as J.M. in the court document, encountered Francisco Ajanel-Ventura face down and hiding in the brush.

Ajanel-Ventura, noticing the agent, positioned himself in the arrest position on his knees and then lunged at the agent and grabbed onto his legs which led to a short struggle, records show.

Ajanel-Ventura grabbed onto the agent’s legs and attempted to tackle him to the ground – at this time the agent called out for his fellow agents to help him detain Ajanel-Ventura.

The Guatemalan national momentarily escaped from agent J.M.’s custody after he struck the agent in the head but was detained by the other agents, records show.

Agent J.M. suffered cuts to his face and was treated and released after receiving several stitches.

Ajanel-Ventura was charged with assaulting a federal officer.
