SACRAMENTO, May 22 (Reuters) - U.S. border patrol agents
found 13 illegal immigrants in the back of a fake UPS van after
they noticed the brown vehicle with yellow insignia trying to
circumvent a highway checkpoint, the agency said on Tuesday.

The agents arrested the passengers, identified as Mexican
citizens without legal immigration documents, at an inland
checkpoint on Friday on the dusty Highway 111, about 50 miles by
car from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The driver of the replica mail delivery van, a 21-year-old
U.S. citizen, was also arrested for attempting to smuggle
illegal immigrants, the border patrol said.

"After further investigation, agents determined that the van
was not a legitimate UPS van," the agency said in a release.

In recent years, increasingly crafty drug and people
smugglers from Mexico have turned to "cloning" vehicles to try
to evade tightening security along the U.S.-Mexico border.

They include making vehicles look like delivery vans and, in
one instance, a beer truck. In 2010, authorities in Arizona
found a vehicle disguised as a police patrol car, complete with
sirens and flashing lights, which they believed was being used
by brazen bandits to rip off drug loads in transit.

Photos provided by the border patrol show a large Ford cargo
van painted dark brown, with a slightly crooked UPS logo affixed
to the back door and the company logo written on the side of the
van. Darkened windows would have hidden anyone crouched inside.

A fake UPS van used to a failed attempt to smuggle immigrants into the United States.

A fake UPS van was used to try and smuggle 13 undocumented immigrants into the United States, officials said Tuesday. The brown van was outfitted with UPS-like labels on the sides and rear doors.

The driver was a U.S. citizen and the passengers were from Mexico, according to a news release from Customs and Border Protection’s office in El Centro.

No, there were no drugs involved and this was about as far along the border as you can get from Texas, but it is a reminder of the creativity that is out there and leaves little doubt that this was not the first cloned vehicle, and it will not be the last.

Niland, Calif. – On Friday afternoon, El Centro Sector CBP U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a 21-year-old male attempting to smuggle illegal aliens using a cloned United Parcel Service (UPS) van.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., after Border Patrol agents observed a UPS van attempting to circumvent the Highway 111 Checkpoint. Agents conducted a vehicle stop and discovered 13 passengers hiding inside the back of the van. After further investigation, agents determined that the van was not a legitimate UPS van.

The driver was identified as a United States citizen. The 13 passengers were identified as Mexican citizens without legal immigration documents. The driver and illegal aliens were arrested and the cloned UPS van was seized.

EDINBURG - Investigators seized a truck north of La Joya Wednesday. Three suspected smugglers were arrested.

The truck looks just like a real Fed Ex truck; the license plate number even matches a truck owned by the company. But the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office says it was all a clever ploy to smuggle drugs. The license plate was actually a magnet made to look just like a real plate.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says the truck was big enough to hide more than a ton of drugs. The FBI has been called in to help with the investigation.
