A Denton County sheriff's officer was critically injured Sunday when he was hit by a suspected drunken driver, officials said.
Officer Jim Terry was riding his motorcycle to work at the Denton County jail when he was struck by 42-year-old Oscar Salmeron, officials said.

Salmeron fled the scene but was apprehended by Denton police and is being held in the Denton County jail. Before striking Terry he hit another vehicle and failed to stop, officials said.

Salmeron has a hold from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and has been charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury, accident involving damage to a vehicle, duty on striking unattended vehicle, duty on striking fixture/highland landscape.

Terry has multiple broken bones and suffered extensive injuries, according to a GoFundMe. He has undergone one surgery that went well and is expected to have more surgeries Wednesday and Thursday, officials said.

Terry has been with the sheriff's office for two years.

In addition to the GoFundMe was created for his family's medical expenses and other needs, another account will be set up at the DATCU Credit Union for direct donations.

"Officer Terry is a veteran and a Brother in Blue," the GoFundMe states. "He has served our country and community, now its our turn to support him in this time of need."
