PHOENIX - Sponsors of legislation targeting automatic citizenship granted to U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants say they plan to formally introduce their bills in the Arizona House and Senate on Thursday.
Republican Sen. Ron Gould of Lake Havasu City said he and Republican Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills agreed on a day for each to introduce the legislation but Gould said that timetables for consideration of the bills by the separate chambers will diverge at that point.
Gould is the Senate Judiciary Committee's chairman and he said he expects the committee will consider his bill in early February.
Meanwhile, Kavanagh indicated that House action on his bill might wait for approval of a new state budget.

Thank god we have some politicians with some sense to get this ball rolling. I think that if they can get rid of the illegal birthright citizenship, there will be a huge drop in illegal immigration.

They are going to be lining up to sue (as usual) on this one...

Arizona is expected to set off another seismic immigration wave on Thursday, when both chambers of its legislature expect to hear the introduction of bills denying citizenship to U.S.-born babies of undocumented immigrants.
Republican State Sen. Ron Gould said he and Republican State Rep. John Kavanagh agreed on a day for each to introduce the legislation, but Gould said that timetables for consideration of the bills by the separate chambers will diverge at that point.
Arizona's legislation would define a U.S. citizen as someone who has been naturalized, or someone born in this country who has at least one parent who has no allegiance to a foreign country.
Gould is the Senate Judiciary Committee's chairman and he said he expects the committee will consider his bill in early February. Meanwhile, Kavanagh indicated that House action on his bill might wait for approval of a new state budget.
Sen. Russell Pearce, the architect of Arizona’s well-known, controversial immigration measure, SB 1070 -- which, among other things, allows police to enforce immigration laws -- is a sponsor of the citizenship legislation.

State lawmakers take on the U.S. Constitution and the issue of birthright babies

PHOENIX - The national immigration debate is taking center stage in Arizona as state lawmakers file bills concerning birthright babies.
Arizona lawmakers plan to file bills in order to stop babies born to non-citizen parents from becoming U.S. citizens.
"This bill we take very personal," said Sandra Castro.
Born in the United States to illegal immigrants, Castro sees this bill as a slap in the face.
"We just take it as a personal attack and we feel it's something that's just targeted as another anti-immigration tactic," Castro said.
But the sponsors of the bills, Sen. Ron Gould and Rep. John Kavanaugh, told me there are many reasons to tackle this issue.
"It encourages illegal immigration and it greatly increases the cost to state governments," Kavanaugh said.
"We want the Supreme Court to rule on the issue of children being born to illegal immigrants, which they've never really done," Gould said.
They add, now is the time.
They are joining with about a dozen other states in filing a birthright citizenship bill.
"We can't get congress to move so we're going to try and get the ball rolling at the local level," Kavanaugh said, hoping after the bill passes either the U.S. Supreme Court or the U.S. Congress will have to act.
"Because the federals won't engage, they wont do anything," Gould sai.
Which leaves Castro to wonder why do they want to change anything at all?
"We're tomorrow's teachers, we're tomorrow's firefighters, we're tomorrow's workers so we benefit this society and I don't understand why we're being targeted," said Castro.
