Illegal alien babysitter charged with killing 7-week-old girl in Ohio

Illegal alien babysitter charged with killing 7-week-old girl in Ohio

    September 27, 2014

booking photoOn Monday, Laura Flores-Santillan, 49, entered a 'not guilty' plea during her arraignment in a Summit County courtroom, after she reportedly killed a 7-week-old baby girl who was left at her in-home daycare, according to court documents.

On the morning of Sept. 4, Flores-Santillan brought the baby's limp body to a neighbor's home. With the assistance of a 911 operator, the neighbor performed CPR on the infant, who began breathing once again.

The tiny victim, identified as Emily Cortes, was taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where she remained on life support for four days. The Summit County Medical Examiner has determined the girl died from blunt force cranial trauma.

Flores-Santillan has been charged with murder, one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering. She is currently being held at the Summit County Jail on an ICE detainer.

Despite being in the country illegally, Flores-Santillan has operated a daycare at her Akron home for the last seven years, and was caring for nine children at the time the infant suffered her mortal wounds, reported the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Mexican national speaks only Spanish and will require the use of an interpreter (at the expense of the taxpayers) throughout her court proceedings. Her next court appearance is set for Oct. 8.

Unfortunately, this horrific crime represents only the latest example of the human toll being taken on this country, not only by those here illegally, but some could say by the Obama administration as well (which could put an end to the crimes committed by illegal aliens, simply by defending our border with Mexico and by strictly enforcing our immigration laws).

Is the Mexican government paying for her legal representation? They are there to protect their citizens for everything else

AKRON, Ohio — The woman accused of killing a 7-week-old girl she babysat is now indicted on murder charges.
Laura Flores-Santillan, 49, of Akron, now faces charges of two counts of murder, one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering.

Flores-Santillan, who is jailed on $1 million bond, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

The former in-home daycare operator is accused of killing Emily Cortes on Sept. 4 at Flores-Santillan home. She cared for nine children at the daycare.

Her death was ruled a homicide by blunt force cranial trauma by the Summit County Medical Examiner.

Flores-Santillan took the dying baby to a neighbor's home early in the morning. Police records and the neighbor said the baby wasn't breathing at the time. A dispatcher directed the neighbor how to perform CPR on the baby, the neighbor said.

Blood gushed from the baby's nose, she started breathing again and the ambulance rushed her to Akron Children's Hospital, where she died four days later.

A spokeswoman for the Summit County Prosecutor's office declined to provide information as to how Flores-Santillan killed the girl. Police said the baby suffered internal head injuries while in the sole custody of Flores-Santillan.

Flores-Santillan is a mother of three children and a grandmother, who cares for her family and runs a daycare out of her home. The daycare has operated for about seven years without any problems, her attorney said.

Flores-Santillan is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who has lived in the United States for 11 years and at her Chalker Street home for nine.

If you take care of 7 or children in Ohio you must be licensed. I would ask if she reported the income from the Day Care business or only took cash. Then, the question would be whether or not she has or had received public benefits while she was operating a business and using those assets for her business. - It seems that illegals do everything in an illegal way to get money. The Lutheran Church is involved in this one also. The Lutheran Church should lose it's tax exempt status for engaging in political activism. JMO

AKRON, Ohio — A 7-week-old child hospitalized Thursday after investigators said she was abused by a daycare owner has died.

The child, identified as Emily Cortes, was taken to Akron Children's Hospital on Thursday after a neighbor performed CPR and revived the unresponsive child. The child remained on life support until 1:45 p.m. Monday, when she was taken off life support and died.

The Summit County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on Tuesday. Prosecutors and police will then confer about how to proceed with the case, depending on the outcome of the autopsy.

Authorities called Emily a suspected homicide victim on Monday after her death.

The woman accused of abusing the child, Laura Flores-Santillan, 49, made the second part of her initial court appearance Monday morning on abuse charges.

More than a dozen family members and friends showed up to court Monday to lend their support.

Akron Municipal Court Judge Annalisa S. Williams declined to lower the $1 million bond set for Flores-Santillan, who faces charges of felonious assault and child endangering in connection with the girl's injuries that turned fatal later on Monday.

Flores-Santillan initially went to court on Friday, but had to appear again on Monday because no interpreter was available last week.

Investigators will not comment on what led them to charge Flores-Santillan.

"We have to have probable cause to issue the charges and we have probable cause," Akron Police Capt. Dan Zampelli said. "We will present that probable cause to the grand jury and let them decide. We're not going to say anything about the case until then."

Flores-Santillan, clad in a orange prison uniform and handcuffs, waved at family members before the hearing on Monday.

Flores-Santillan, who doesn't speak English, addressed the court and communicated with defense attorney Tom Bauer with an interpreter.

Flores-Santillan cried at times while awaiting her hearing and when she saw her family.

Flores-Santillan operates an in-home daycare for nine children, including Emily, Bauer said in court. Akron police are investigating the daycare operation along with children's services and other agencies.

Flores-Santillan took the baby to a neighbor's home on Thursday morning. Police records and the neighbor said the baby wasn't breathing at the time. A dispatcher directed the neighbor how to perform CPR on the baby, the neighbor said.

Blood gushed from the baby's nose, she started breathing again and the ambulance rushed her to Akron Children's Hospital.
Flores-Santillan is a mother of three children and a grandmother, who cares for her family and runs a daycare out of her home. The daycare has operated for about seven years without any problems, Bauer said.

Flores-Santillan is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who has lived in the United States for 11 years and at her Chalker Street home for nine, Bauer said.

Officials at the hearing said U.S. Immigration and Nationalization was contacted, but the agency will likely wait until the court case against Flores-Santillan is resolved before taking any action, Bauer said.

Bauer also told the judge they have a defense in the case.

"It can't be determined who caused the injuries," Bauer said after the hearing. "A lot of this has to do with when she was injured."

Flores-Santillan's family members declined comment at the hearing but two family friends and the pastor of Sacred Heart Lutheran Church all described Flores-Santillan as a good person whom they believe would never harm a child.

Bricia Martinez, whose 7-year-old daughter is one of the nine kids in Flores-Santillan's daycare, said her daughter loves Flores-Santillan and even calls her "grandma."

"My daughter is always happy to stay with her," Martinez said. "She's a really nice lady. She's always helping people."

Pastor Jorge Uhzo said that she is an active participant in the church and community. Another friend, Elida Salas, said she's known her for two years after moving to Akron. Salas said Flores-Santillan has been like a family member.

"She's such a good person," Salas said through Martinez, who interpreted for her. "She's a helper. She likes to help other people."

No one was at the Cortes family's home on Monday when a reporter knocked at the door. A convenience store, Servi Express, is taking up donations for the family.

AKRON, Ohio — A babysitter accused of killing a 7-week-old baby at her in-home daycare pleaded not guilty to murder charges on Monday.

Laura Flores-Santillan, 49, entered the not-guilty plea Monday at her arraignment in front of Summit County Common Pleas Judge Thomas Teodosio.

She will next appear in court on Oct. 8 for a pretrial hearing. Flores-Santillan entered the plea with the help of a Spanish interpreter.

Teodosio also appointed attorney Farhad Sethna to be her attorney for any immigration issues that arise from the case.

Teodosio told Flores-Santillan through the interpreter that she could face deportation if convicted in the case.

Flores-Santillan is charged with two counts of murder, one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering. She remains jailed on $1 million bond.

The former in-home daycare operator is accused of killing Emily Cortes on Sept. 4. Flores-Santillan cared for nine children at the daycare that she ran out of her home.

New Mexican-You are supposed to be licensed in NE too. Unfortunately if they don't open the doors to the state or pretend not to be home the state can't do anything about it. I know this from experience as I turned in a former non english speaking day care provider in that lived beside me for numerous reasons.
