KARNES CITY - Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday will open a refurbished detention center three hours north of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Karnes City center will house women and children who entered the country illegally through the Valley.
The 532-bed facility underwent a massive renovation to house women and children. The center housed only adult immigrants in the past.
Immigrants will be at the facility for an average of 23 days.
The feds said the immigrants will be referred to as "residents" and the rooms as "suites." The suites are furnished with flat-screen television sets and landline telephones. The center has a soccer field covered with artificial turf, ping pong tables and a weight room.
A charter school nearby will provide schooling and access to a library for the immigrant children.

South Texas ICE detention facility to house adults with children
I.C.E. News Release
JULY 31, 2014
KARNES CITY, TX
South Texas ICE detention facility to house adults with children
KARNES CITY, Texas — Beginning Aug. 1, and in response to the influx of families that have recently illegally entered the United States, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will use its civil detention facility in Karnes City to house adults with children.
The newly modified Karnes County Residential Center (KCRC) is one of several facilities the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is using to increase its capacity to detain and expedite the removal of adults with children who illegally crossed the Southwest border.
These facilities will help ensure more timely and effective removals, and deter others from taking the dangerous journey and illegally crossing into the United States, all while maintaining important due process and protection claims that individuals may have. In addition to the Karnes facility, ICE is also using a temporary facility in Artesia, New Mexico, and a long-standing facility in Leesport, Pennsylvania.
"In the face of unprecedented levels of illegal migration of adults with children and unaccompanied children in the Rio Grande Valley, we have reiterated that our borders are not open to illegal migration; if you come here illegally, and don't have a legal basis to stay under our laws, we will send you back," said Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.
"The opening of this additional facility represents our continued commitment to provide temporary facilities for adults with children while they undergo removal proceedings, and it is part of DHS' sustained and aggressive campaign to stem the tide of illegal migration from Central America."
On July 11, 2014, ICE modified its contract with Karnes County, Texas, in order to transition the Karnes center from an existing immigration detention facility housing adults to a residential facility to house adults with children. This was done to expand the agency's capacity to house adults with children who have been apprehended at the border and placed into expedited removal proceedings. Karnes County Residential Center will be able to accommodate up to 532 adults with children.
ICE's family detention facilities are an effective and humane alternative to maintain family unity as families await the outcome of immigration hearings or return to their home countries. Adults with children will be housed in facilities that adequately provide for their safety, security and medical needs. ICE ensures that family detention facilities operate in an open environment, which includes classrooms with state-certified teachers, access to an online legal library and bilingual teachers.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security.
ICE is a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities. For more information, visit www.ICE.gov. To report suspicious activity, call 1-866-347-2423 or complete our tip form.

Confirmed: Illegal Alien Kids Will Be Going to Publicly Funded Charter School in Texas
by
BRYAN PRESTON
July 31, 2014 - 3:04 pm
KRGV reports that a refurbished detention center in Karnes City, TX, will be used to house hundreds of women and children who crossed into Texas illegally.
The center’s rooms, called “suites,” have only been used to house adult illegal aliens in the past, but with the recent surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America, it will now be used to house kids too.
KRGV’s story says that the illegal aliens will only be housed at the center for an average of 23 days, or that’s the federal government’s claim. The facility includes flatscreen TVs in each suite, plus ping pong tables and even an astroturf soccer field.
But in the story’s final paragraph, there is a suggestion that the stay will be longer than 23 days.
A charter school nearby will provide schooling and access to a library for the immigrant children.Charter schools are publicly funded independent schools, and are intended to allow American students to escape failing public schools. Now this one will be used to give illegal alien kids access to the quality of schools that many American kids cannot obtain.

KARNES CITY - Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday will open a remodeled detention center three hours north of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Karnes City center will house women and children who entered the country illegally through the Valley.
The 532-bed facility underwent a massive renovation to house women and children. The center housed only adult immigrants in the past.
Immigrants will be at the facility for an average of 23 days.
The feds said the rooms will be referred to as "suites." The suites are furnished with bunk beds, play tables for children, flat-screen television sets and landline telephones.
"I will refer to everyone in this facility as a resident. ICE generally refers to people in custody as detainees," ICE San Antonio Field Office Director Enrique Lucero said.
Lucero oversaw the transformation of the center.
The center has a soccer field covered with artificial turf, basketball courts, ping pong tables and a weight room. Officials also have plans to install a playground.
A charter school from nearby San Antonio will provide schooling and access to a library for the immigrant children.
The immigrants will get medical screenings. Children will receive physicals within 24 hours of arriving at the center and women within a week.
"There is a dentist on site," Lucero said.
There is a room where the immigrants will get to pick new clothes. Every illegal immigrant will be able to choose six sets of clothes, including shoes and socks.
"While residents are here ... we will provide a safe and humane environment," Lucero said.
The feds estimate it will cost approximately $74,000 a day to house 532 immigrants at the center. That's an average of $140 a day per person.
Officials did not disclose how much the government spent to refurbish the center.
